The problem with being 39 and getting pro lessons...

With the amount of money I spent tonight I could get a lesson from Jerry Breiseth. The problem is that I've got two kids. If Jerry fixed my stroke now I might think I'm good and lose my kids college money on the 9 footers.

I guess being the top shooter in a local league full of rejects will have to suffice.Family first right ;)

Forget about the kids my man. Get that stroke fixed :grin-square

Just turned 39 on Monday. I also dominate a weak league but atleast I won the weekly tourny tonite too. But that mean ratings goin up. I'm not so sure any lessons matter unless you play a buttload during the week. I am short and recently started emulating orcullo stroke. Trying to keep my chin on or near cue and not move around cue ball too much. Good enough for now but packages are not so often. Enjoy your kids. And ENJOY pool.

I dont know about the lessons not mattering. Im 53 and i just took a good lesson from Max Eberle here in Vegas and my game improved already. Showed me things about my stroke that i was totally oblivious too and made sense in other areas also.
So dont think the lessons wont help.

It s a journey that never stops my friend :)
Know several *older calibers* which improved in the 40s to 60 s. Even know personally some guys in the 50 s who suddenly started to make runs of 100. So just have fun, and work on your game.
Learning never ends!

I'm just curious. I'm 59 & have never had a lesson other then when my Dad introduced me to game when I was 13. What di Max say about your stroke?

Please pass on the info. It might help another old dog.

If I had been introduced to TOI before I met my future wife, I might have gone pro back in the day & woud not have 4 grown children & a grandchild on the way.

Maybe one day pool will get to the level of golf where a pool pro can make enough to support a family of 6. But to be honest I doubt it. Since being on AZB I have notice a vast difference from people that play golf.

Take care of that family.

Best Wishes,

The kids won't be at home for long. You can work on your stroke then. Pool is a game. Kids are the future.

Older player lessons?

About a year ago, I gave lessons to a couple fellas who drove a ways for our session. One was 86 and the other was 95. They had no unrealistic expectations...they just wanted to improve a bit. We had a great time.

Great side note!! Play it to enjoy it. ...I turned '0 klickety, klick' (66) this year and still enjoy it.

Don't use your age and life's situation as an excuse to improve your game.

Family definitely comes first.

I worked all of my life and raised a family.

What I also did was figure out the game. That way I didn't have to play as much as some of the full time players.

If you take a lesson, make sure the person you go to knows their stuff. They can either make or break you.

I played my best pool between the ages of 35 and 45.

Good Luck!

Take lessons WITH the kids

I'm lucky that my son LOVES pool, so I have been taking him around the rooms and leagues and tournaments for 4 years or so, but both of us need lessons to get better I think.

Tom posted here, he worked with my son for a bit (thanks to a bet he lost LOL :grin-square:), he has also listened to Jerry at the Jr Nationals last year in WI, has played sets and games with pros.

I have picked up some stuff from watching what he was learning and from things people showed him as well. While I can't afford a regular session of lessons (being out of work for a few months just now killed a lot of extra activities), I can still play enough to progress a bit here and there, at 41. In fact, just a few months ago I learned something about how I play that improved my shot making and position on straight shots and small angles by a large amount.

That's basically my motto!

I got some good instruction when I was 50. I got way better. I used to be the top shooter in a weak league and now I'm the top shooter by a greater margin in the same weak league and still get my ass beat when I leave town.

If only I would have acted on it 11 years sooner!! I could have been a contender!

Well for starters my stance was off , my stroking arm was hitting my body at times so he showed me the right way to line up.
My arm was also doing a lot of "Steering" which i was aware of but not to the extent that i was doing it. He showed me stroking the cue in a mirror and i could see it plain as day.

I was also gripping the cue too far forward and wasnt getting the right follow through as i was always stopping short. Im a fairly big guy and i was always using the 6 inches behind the balance point of the cue, and my arms are a lot longer than that, so he showed me where to grip it and im getting way better action on my draw shots.
A few other things also, but its like learning how to play all over again.
