The Public's Perception on Pool

Exactly....

Public opinion? ?? Sheit..

Keep in mind, these are the same people that buy millions of McDonald's crapburgers, watch honey boo boo and listen to miley cyrus.

The general public is dumb as a box of rocks .
I wouldn't sweat it.

Exactly try working with them much and you will sure find out.

What I love about AZB is that it's a mirror of life. I ride motorcycles. 43 years of age, but have not got to the point where a cruiser has even entered my mind. I still ride sport bikes, or what the Harley riders call "ricers", "crotch rockets", etc. I have had many a Harley rider make fun of my "toy bike", or ask me how many hamsters are in the engine. I smile...laugh with them. And when we're riding, I sit behind him as he rides beside his buddy (a complete no no if you're a true rider) with his smoke hung out of his mouth, his gut on the gas tank, his assless leather chaps, and the badass brain bucket. Meanwhile, I'm in full riding gear, a full faced helmet, kidney belt, riding boots, and riding in a staggered formation. And the second I get a clean pass, I rip past the guy like he's standing still, tip into a corner at 60mph, and proceed to ride my bike for the reason I ride....I love motorcycles, and could care less about the image, or how I look. There are 80% that ride because of the image, and 20% that ride because they love two wheels. I'm the latter.

Pool is very much the same. There are those that play because it's cooler than bingo. Or because they love action. I play because I love the sound of the balls hitting each other. I can watch balls rolling on a table for hours. But I've never felt the need to make someone else feel stupid because their opinion is different than mine. However, some people feel a sense of entitlement once they become proficient with a cue, and they talk down about the newbies in the pool hall, or the hacks on the table, or the 3s and 4s that never progress in their leagues.

I've never felt the need to promote the sport by putting another sport down. Everyone here feels slighted by the comments on a board regarding pool, yet two people on here then want to retaliate and badmouth rhythmic gymnastics, synchro swimming, and curling as not being any more a sport than pool. They are. Deal with it. There are probably more curlers worldwide than pool players. There are probably more rock climbers than pool players worldwide. I don't see rock climbing as an olympic sport, either, and it's more physically demanding than pool.

So, feel free to badmouth other sports because you feel slighted. It's a reflection on you and your opinions. I choose to have my opinion, and not at the expense of someone else's passion or choice of activity. If you can't accept that "ribbon dancing" is an olympic sport, petition the IOC. But there are lots of little girls all over the world enrolled in gymnastics that thoroughly enjoy that ribbon. And tonnes of moms and dads that are proud of their kids for twirling that ribbon. And you're a complete asshat if you need to put that little girl down about her sport to make yourself feel more like a "man" about pool.

Holy Bat Catastrophe. All of this from one little comment I made ?? Oh, here it was again,

"As long as Curling is a sport, and a recognized Olympic sport at that, than Billiards qualifies. If someone can win a Gold Medal for brushing ice with a broom, then they need to leave the insults to pool the FCK alone :)"

That has gotten you this ape shit to post 3 replies since then, including the diatribe above about riding motorcycles past fat Harley riders while you laugh at them and try and show them up on your racer bike ??

So, just to be clear, I can't make an innocent joke that Curling is kinda lame (really it is) and fully admit that billiards is kinda lame for the Olympics, but you can make fun of Harley riders, but also how you like to show them up on your little racer bike?

Too funny.. you Curlers must be a GAS to hang out with ;)

I love the argument: "______ is a bull**** sport and it's in the Olympics so pool should be too."

Except I was joking and admitted that POOL should NOT be an Olympic sport because it would be boring to 99.7% of the population. Though, it will still have slightly better ratings than Curling ;)

Well when we get it here the next time we can submit our sports ,, however I think pool will lose out to corn hole

I just find it hilarious that a guy who has never curled, tried the sport, or even knows anything about how to actually play the game can make comments about it.

Curlers are a blast to hang out with. Much nicer than opinionated know it alls that think things are "lame". Are you 12?

If it was NOT a sport, I should be able to teach my grandmother to play excellent pool But I can't. I should expect somone older than 50 to win a world championship, but we can't. Because one's skills, hand eye coordination and eye sight fade with age. Not so with games. Still plenty of top poker players, chess players and bridge players over the age of 50 !!!

Alfredo de Oro won his last Three Cushion World Championships in 1919 at the age of 55 or 56. He was born in 1863. Just sayin :) don't write folks off because they are over 50.

I wish i could watch what i wanted during the olympics easily i usually only watch on us tv. You cannot watch all of most disciplines. If pool or snooker or 3c was in the olympics i would watch. So would i be alone no i dont think so i think plenty of people who play would watch any cue sport/game. It would not diminish the olympics and would not enlarge it either.

Is it the olympic games. If so cue sports qualify. Sport game whatever it is more than eye hand coordination it is a fine touch and also powerfule strokes. Fundamentals. Mental strength. And desire and imagination plus knowledge.

The cream rises in a real sport and so that tells me that cue based games are a sport perhaps many would not watch but i think the naysayers would be suprised.

I am a pool fan who thinks pool is interesting to watch when played at a high level on tough equipment most pool on tv in the us has been porly produced in the past. I think it has been presented much better for snooker in britian. Asian pool is probably better but i have not seen it. I would expect if pool made the olympics it would not get anything any better in the us. A snippet here or there. So i reckon it does not matter much and it probably dont make the olympics anyway

This is from my iphone so excuse the typing and editing

I don't know if this has been brought up already, but we can have 10-ball races to 100 in the olympics. True test of stamina, and there'd be no question who's the best at the end :lmao::deadhorse:

sport

What I don't understand is how people who play pool don't already see things like this. Pool is great, I love it, but it's not a sport. It's a wonderful game and it's very tough but it doesn't take strength or speed or athleticism. Not to mention, how many "sports" are played in dress shoes and occasionally in a bow tie? Case closed.

Whether pool is a sport has been beaten to death on AZ.

Arguing semantics gets us nowhere.

The OP asked why pool has a bad image in the US.

IMO. you can place a lot of the reason on the typical room owner who caters to drunks and not pool players. Intelligent owners can balance the two and be quite successful.

But I've known a proprietor who didn't show any support for one of his leagues because "they didn't drink enough", and another who banned players for complaining about the horrible conditions at his establishment. And I could give you many more examples.

This is why the best billiard centers are usually owned by people who really love the game.

WOW and I thought we were talking about there being no Pool Rooms in twenty
years, oh, I must have read the post, I hate when that happens.

Don't worry it's something you probably wouldn't know anything about !
Carry on.

 I was lauging at the whiners who complain that pool is NOT an Olympic sport while curling IS an Olympic sport.

Thanks form the opportunity to rub it in more sport !

Btw the tour in that link I posted will have $2.5 million in prize money in two years, $1.5 next year. Too bad pool doesn't have this level of organisation, sponsorship, and professional success :p

Dave <--- was in a very successful local pool room last night and they had a waiting list for tables by 7:45 ... thought it was cool that the groups get called with those flashing-light things

I'm not really into curling, but the curling ladies are alright! I don't mind watching it occasionally, but I don't plan on joining a curling team anytime soon. :grin-square:

Best,
Mike

Maybe we should get collard shirts, funky pants and spiked shoes, would that make pool a sport?

If strength doesnt matter why has no woman ever been a threat to the top 50-100 men. Before u say it i know jean b was a great player might win a short race the same with the modern era women they might get to 7 first but they will not win a long session is that mental no it is strength in my opinion. Or why is no top wonan on par with the top men.

A Rose by any other Game...

Why must an activity be considered a "sport" to be included in the Olympic "Games"?

Whether considered a sport or game, or whatever, billiards is beautiful. If some cannot see that, then I pity their ignorance. Or maybe it's just personal preference. Either way, I couldn't care less whether it is "worthy" of being an Olympic event or not.
