The question never asked on azbilliards....

If you're playing Russian Billiards....
...it's just one big steppe

just this past week a fellow player and I were asking, if you played a 4 hour session, how many miles do we walk? I hope someone comes up with the answer, just curious.

Exactly how many steps does it take to walk around your pool table?
I remember Mosconi saying he walked 3 miles when he ran the 500+ balls. Of course he had no way of knowing this but I have wondered how far I walked sometimes. I often player sessions for 15 and 18 hours or more. I thought about how much I had walked and wondered how far it was.

I know after an 18 hour session you can really feel it. Some players look like they are going to drop during long sessions. It takes a toll on you mentally and physically.

Turn your phone app or step counter on to see how many steps you are taking and convert to miles. Someone might count casually strolling from one shot to another as exercise these days as it has to be better for you than sitting on a couch in front of a TV eating junk food.

1.8 miles, based on:

a) the actual space you're walking in is larger than the table (unless you're walking on the rails). So, for a 9ft table let's say the walking area is 6' x 12' (i.e. plus 1-1/2 ft on each side)

b) assume you average walking 1/2 the distance around the table per shot or 18' per shot.

c) assume you're playing 9-ball. 9 shots per game (you made one on the break and ran the rest of the rack = 9 shots). Add two "shot equivalents" for racking, changing cues, etc.

Total 11 shots per game X 18' per shot = 198 feet walked per game.

d) assume 5 minutes per game (12 games per hour)

Total 2,376 feet walked per hour (198 X 12)

4-hour total is 9,504 feet, or 1.8 miles.

It doesn't make much difference if you miss a shot occassionally (or actually, if you miss every shot) as long as you're taking 132 shots per hour and walking an average of 18' per shot.

You've exercised quite hard: time to have a beer and burger!

Bar Box?!?! I was under the impression most AZ'ers didn't walk around them, only shit on them.

This post wins the thread :p

Someone above posted to have your phone count the steps. Even if your phone doesn't come with that ability built in, there are free apps that do the same thing, I've used one before (not while walking around a pool table tho)

I don't have a table but when I play against John at the Senior Center, I do most of my walking from the chair to the rack and back to the chair. :(

I would use a step counter to keep track of a set like a race to 7, but the question is what is the number of steps around your pool table.
You could just eyeball the table and come up with an educated guess of 6-steps +/-15%

Sadly I have done this and I do about 3000... That can take a few hours.

Don't judge me please.
