The Rafael Martinez jump stroke

I couldn't help but notice John Schmidt's sidearm jump shot stroke when playing the last few matches of the Open. The first time I really saw this type of stroke for a jump shot, it was done by Rafael Martinez, with great success I might add.

It interested me at the time because I have trouble with jump shots since I am only 5'7". I guessed Rafael to be about 5'5" tall.

How tall is John Schmidt? I am guessing 5'8" tall.

Although John's sidearm stroke works for jump shots, I can still see where aiming the jump shot would be more intense for accuracy of it, especially for different types of jump shots. I have tried this a little, but it seems harder to get just the right aiming line for the shots, or to keep the cue ball from squirting a little.

I only use stroke method for jump shots. I have only seen 2 people that are that consistent using the dart method overall. Most darters can not
make an open ball a half table away with the ball being away from the pocket consistently.

Anyone else use a sidearm stroke on jump shots?

Scott,

I have tried the sidearm stroke with a full cue and find aiming very difficult.

I will say this, I watched John shoot for the first time at the Predator Open in 2005 and I have to say that his ability to jump with a full cue is unreal. He jumped a full ball across the table basically lined up from side pocket to side pocket, his technique is very very good!

i think a big part of jumping a ball has to do with the cue that you use.(tip included)i use the same cue that john uses. bobby hunter has been making all of his cues at 57" for a few years now. i jump a ball with much more accuracy than i use . now i dont play anywhere close to the level john plays at, but i can tell you that with this cue i make a lot more of my jump shots.

It's widely known that Rafael Martinez jumps with a full cue better than any player out there. He jumps a full ball from mid table like nothing. And if you haven't seen what he can do with the masse shot, you are missing out on some incredible stuff.

Rafael played at our event this last weekend in Houston.

His power strokes, masse, and jump shots were, to say the least, SPOOKY!

Somebody ought to videotape this guy with his amazing abilities: side jump, massé... all of it. Better yet, put it on youtube or something. I hear so many damn good things about this cat. I know he lies lurking around Texas haunting those that beheld him. I just have not seen this fellow!

I played with Rafael on a team when he spent some time in Germany. I can only attest to his amazing abilities. Here are a few examples...

There's his power force draw shot where the cueball pushes forward a couple inches before the spin takes effect.

One time when we were fooling around he did masse shots on these gimmicky mini pool tables and made most of the balls he attempted.

The most amazing thing happened when he had a match and he got his new cue from Mexico the day before. He was warming up and checked the rails. He ended up playing kick shots with a new cue on a foreign table and ended up making about 80%. This included everything from one to five rail kicks.

I finally got to see Martinez in action at the last DCC and he is really amazing. Your absoultely right he can masse out of anything .....or at least he makes it seem that way.

Rafael's currently in the area... so I'll keep my digital camera with me at all times in my p/u and next time I see him at Russian Dave's, I'll ask him to jump some balls for me while I video tape him. He'll probably do it for me. ;)

i used a side stroke also. what many players dont know is you have to choke up on the cue like right at end of forearm and beginning of your wrap. this puts everything back in line when your jacked up

Tom Simpson has an online demonstration on how to use a jump cue. Don't have a link but you should be able to google it up.
