The reality of a pool reality show.

If one is ever made, we will all hate it, and call all the BS that is passed by as "reality" on the show.

Look at "Street Outlaws" as an example. REAL car enthuesiest hate the show, but like the cars on it. We all think it's scripted, and/or fake. I try to watch it, but it's very hard for me to stomach some of the stupidity.

I think it would be good for pool, and bad for pool at the same time. Maybe it will develope easy action. Who know?

Either way, I'm guessing us pool nuts will hate it if it ever happens. There is seldom reality in "reality shows..."

Agree 110%.

If we like it, it will be a flop. We're not the target market.

Of course, if it features beautiful women (as per my suggestion in the original thread), we'll like it.

My first desire for pool was to do a documentary on it. I wanted to follow Oscar Dominguez around for a year and get a slice of life of the pool world at the same time. In essence, the doc wouldn't have been all about Oscar, but about his experiences in this day and age of the pool world and of all the characters that he has to associate with and compete against.

Given about $100k, I would still shoot this project, even if it was with someone else, like Shane, Dennis O, Efren or Earl. What I liked about Oscar though, was that he comes from a good family and works very hard, not only at his game, but with his father Ernesto as a table mechanic. When I spoke with Oscar about it, he actually liked the idea, and I would still consider him before anyone else. It's not your main character your really telling the story about rather than the story of what the character goes through.

Anyway, now I'm just spilling my beans. I have plenty more where that came from, so I'm not worried.

I love this idea, I hope that you get a chance to make it work! I think if you cut it down to about 6 months of travel you could have better success. Go from Jan-jun. DCC, SBE, and a few other good ones in there!

I think it needs to be gangsta, like Breaking Bad, with hot chicks, dope, money, drama...just like real pool except for the hot chicks and money.
:D

A documentary would please pool players more than a reality show, but it wouldn't get as good ratings.

I just laid a flame egg in another thread about this She Sharks reality concept. REALLY think it will fail in a failing fireball of fail.

SO rather than be an armchair critic, as I love to be. I will share a concept that might work.

Cue sports on the every day pedestrian level, you know... reality. Is all about people. The PLAYERS, Room Owners, League Organizers, Promoters, Suppliers and those who (for reasons defying logic) devote gargantuan chunks of their life to building a community around Cue Sports with very little recognition and more often than not, at great expense.

With all of these elements in the gumbo of what we wish to tell the story of through a real live kick to the nuts "Day in the life of" reality series... I axe yas, how hard can it be to build a substantive and compelling real life semi-dramatic series out of all of those moving parts?

Well, I am a writer. It would be a herculean effort, but not unobtainable if you have the right creative hands in the mix. I do not know any of the people involved in any reality shows at all, but most of them are not writers... if they even employ writers. The Cue Sports environment is best described as many facets of the same stone that have absolutely no idea how to shine collectively as the gem it really is.

I dont see anyone or any group of somebodies gripping their collective sacks and just doing a real live solid effort on something like this. Hell, pitching a My Little Pony or Honey Boo-Boo (the Tween years) mini-series would have a far better chance.

If any of you are secretly the head of a major production house, please keep me in mind when you want to give the grand old game a shot in the arm. I have cookies.

I'm sorry, but I really have no idea what you just pitched.

Are you just saying, let's go to a pool hall each episode and encapsulate what's going on there each time?

Lesh, the people behind the reality show we are doing are a huge production company and have expert writers in this field working on it.....

I think it would be better to just have a rotating cast of people that take you through events and halls and situations. Real people meeting all over the country for matches etc. A version of this was and is done in the TAR series. That's just a part of what is possible.

Following event organizers through how they set things up and the players making their way there, the sponsors, the coverage, the competition. Like mini documentary in serial form.

Just spit-balling

Well Lee, if its the same people who put out Mob Wives and Jersey Shore as i mentioned in the other thread, it will be a big piece of crap. All drama and nonsense.
If its not them, then i have no further comment other than i hope it does well.

An advertising biopic of the billiard industry would likely be about as interesting as watching snail races.

History shows that people don't want real reality, they want reality that they can get into and either wish it was them - i.e. Crocodile Hunter, World Poker Tour, or reality that they can laugh at and say thank god it's not them, i.e. Jersey Shore, Real Housewives, etc...

I think normal people could get into the idea of a group of women traveling the country trying to hustle up as money as they can using their pool skills. People like movies with ass-kicking women, they like the romantic notion of the gunslinger outlaw, and they like to watch programs about gambling. Sounds like a great combination for a tv show to me.

Will it be flattering to pool? Maybe in ways not yet known. Maybe throughout the show all the facets of pool that you mentioned will be showcased in some way or another.

I think that the worst that can happen is it disappears from TV quickly and no one remembers it except us.

I see only upside here because if it becomes a hit then the potential for growth of the game as a result is promising. As well if it's a hit then others will want to copy it, think of all the poker shows that followed the WPT as an example.

I could even forsee a Hustle Bus tour where the women show up in prominent college towns and dare all the frat boys to take their money. All sorts of stuff could be done to promote pool positively.

How about the women show up at a NYC firehouse and hustle all the firemen and the money raised is donated to a charity to help victims of fires, stuff like that....

Lots of ways I think to not make it all about the larceny side yet still show that this is a beautiful and deep game.

Angel did that but not with one player. We will see how that is received by the public soon.

That is the sad part, REALITY should not need Writers, with Writers it is no longer REALITY
