The Right Tip for 2" Balls

Hi all. I'm a beginner and as a beginner I have a right to make silly mistakes like purchasing a cue without first playing with a few to get a feel for what I would most benefit from. Long story short, I have purchased a shaft with a 12.8mm tip and I own a 9ft table with rounded pockets and 2" balls. I play mainly 8 ball and some snooker. I'm told tips should be <11mm for 2" balls and >11mm for 2 1/4" balls.

My question is, is it bad to continue to play with this combination? Will my game development suffer and should I purchase a shaft with ~10mm tip? After playing with this 12.8mm tip for over a month now I am used to it and despite it 'feeling' too big my game is improving and I'm not 100% sure it's holding me back. Despite what I think though I'm not experienced which is why I'm asking.

I think the right tip is probably to not wear short, shorts. :wink:

Seriously, I think playing with the snooker balls all of the time will definitely change your aiming and even cue ball action when you get on to a pool table with pool balls. I've played with pool balls on a snooker table before and it's really not much fun but can help your shot making when you get on a pool table. I would say get a set of regulation pool balls and don't change your shaft size if 8 ball is your game. If you're looking to concentrate on snooker then going down in shaft size would be recommended. You're saying that you have Snooker balls and pool balls that are both 2"?? I've played both games with regular 12 1/2 or 13 mm tip, but I've concentrated on pool with the bigger balls. Is this a Snooker table, how big are the pockets?

Yeah they are both 2". The pockets are damn small and rounded so yeah it is a small snooker table pretty much. I'm surprised at the difference between this and a straight cut table with gaping holes for pockets. I can tell you right now which one is more fun but I kind of like mine because it's forcing me to play a lot more accurate shots. Just not a lot of cue ball action. :embarrassed2:
 
For 2" balls I would suggest nothing bigger than 10mm, otherwise your cue ball control and deflection will be out of control.
 
That's not necessarily true. I had my high run in snooker, of 122, shooting with my normal cue, with a 13mm tip. While it's true that snooker players play with smaller tips, it doesn't mean you can't run out, using any size shaft and tip.

well to give you some stats....

in UK eight ball, where the balls are 2", but the white is 1 7/8", the typical tip size is about 8-8.5mm

in snooker the balls are 2 1/16", most common tip size is 9.5mm
