The Star Pattern

Has anyone heard of the "Star Pattern". I would like to learn it.
The basic idea is to freeze object balls on the diamonds and run them. It's a good shot to master, but I think the drill gives too much emphasis to rail shots if it's the main drill you do. I think it is better to work on the shots you have trouble with. Run some racks, find the shots that seem simple but that you consistenly screw up, and figure out a way to practice those.

I have seen the "star system" video. As I remember it has about five minutes of content and the rest is repetition with at least one major error in the explanations.

wow that's great. what's next? call mr. kinister a nit. don't know you, don't know him. don't care about either of you. but there is another thread here asking why league players don't ask for more help on az. and i think you just answered the question. were you going to say what the "major" error was or just insult the video and leave it at that? you're one of the more respected posters on this forum and in your two responses to this thread your advice to this guy was shoot some balls, find your tough shots, and figure it out, and to insult the training drill he inquired about. i can't imagine why some are hesitant to ask questions here. i really expected more of you mr. jewett. those responses are quite a let down.

Good video

If I recall correctly, this video has the pattern laid out and then someone is shooting it to show you the problems that come up with learning the pattern. From there you get the possible solutions.

It is an old video but a useful learning tool. To me, I am not sure if I would get the same information from a simple diagram of the pattern.

Just to clarify my intent... I wasn't giving a thumbs up OR a thumbs down on the Kinister videos. It was my assumption that the OP didn't know that the Star concept was covered by Kinister, which is why I pointed to that particular site. Plus I wanted to welcome a new poster to AZB in a friendly manner. :)

I bought one Kinister video several years ago, I think it was called The Gauntlet. I mostly bought it for the table layout that was included. Supposedly running the Gauntlet would prepare you for many of the situations commonly encountered in a typical but challenging 9ball layout. I liked it, as I think the video and layout accomplished what it intended.

That is the extent of my experience with Kinister's products. :)

I worked at a pool hall that had a bunch of Kinester videos, Ive scene a few, and I would say buyer beware some are ok and some are a joke...

I just ordered a few, (there was one I always wanted because I felt the drill was a good one). I had Bert one the phone, asked about some others he told me the ones he felt I should get...To say Im not happy is a understatment...30$ to watch the same shot over and over for 30 min... With no explanation of what your doing...ROBBED NO QUESTION...The best part is at the end Bert goes on about how he got screwed over on some pool hall deal...Well I hope my 100$ helps get him back on track because its the last money he'll be getting form me...

The videos the OP wants to know about are; The six pointed star, Building the six pointed star...The one I would get is called The ladder...its only one drill over and over but he at least tells you what is going on, and I think its worth knowing...

I have the 6 and 9 pointed star videos, and I would disagree with your basic idea, but I would agree that it shouldn't be the main drill that you do.

The basic idea is how to get to different parts of the table from a rail shot, and I think it is a fantastic workout to implement. Personally, I don't think there is ANY drill that should be the MAIN drill you do. If there is one, it would be playing the ghost and keeping track of your scores to mark your improvement.

Phil, if you don't mind, what level player are you so that we could recommend something that might benefit you the most? And have you tried Colin Colenso's "Potting Test"? That might also help us out to determine where you are. http://www.aimpivotthrow.com/colins-potting-test/

I would say the star patterns are some of berts best vids. shows you how to go side to side , end to side, side to end back and forth, up and down, control the middle of the table and to run out.

I highly recommend berts videos. as others have said, some of berts videos are worth more than others, but every tape has value.

I havent got some of the newer ones but the first 35 have been the best I have seen. Start with video #1. the greatest pool video of all time.

then goto the star patterns, the ladder is great and angles and speed and very underrated. those may have done the most for my game

good luck
