Is it possible that could not play sober and needed the booze to calm his nerves and wound up a hopeless alcoholic?
The other thought is if he did not need the booze and could play sober would he have been an even better player?

An old timer that played at a high level during the Greenleaf years once told me that Greenleaf did not play much better then others at that time but he beat them because he was far better at safely play.

There's no way of knowing for sure, but my observations with drinkers are that it starts because they like to drink and then the excuses for reasons why come later. As for his skill level, I heard he was pretty great and he was a very fast player. They were playing with clay balls that weren't round on thick cloths with ivory cue balls that cracked and fell out of round, so you can't compare their runs with the guys today.

I learned how to play on Anniversary tables with slow cloth and clay balls but no ivory cue balls.
I didn't know any better back then and had a high run of 101 when I was 16.

First time I played on a GC with modern balls there was a bit of adjustment.
And the first time I played on a Diamond there was again a bit of adjustment.

At this point you can’t have a top 10 list without SVB. His resume has gotten even stronger over the past 5 years while the competition has simultaneously gotten much stronger.

And he plays ALL games. While winning WNT majors he is also a top 5 one pocket player in the world. And he’s the best 10 ball player in the world. TO THIS DAY. This is after 17 years of being a professional.

SVB might go down as the goat depending on how he finishes the next 10 years of his career.
