The West Coast Mezz Tour

Oscar Dominguez and his girl Desiree have done an excellent job of putting together a regional tour for West Coast players. There are maybe two or three tournaments a month for several months much like the Joss Northeast tour. Each one has a guaranteed $2,000 added and the entry fee is a very reasonable $65. The tournaments are well run by Oscar and Desiree and the two days don't run too late, so players have a chance to get home in time for work on Monday.

I played my first one this weekend at On Cue Billiards in San Diego. I drove down with Tang Hoa on Saturday morning, and checked into a Motel Six for one night. There were 96 players which kind of surprised me. This brand new tour is attracting large fields of players. That means they are doing something right. They played down to 24 players, all in the money, coming back on Sunday. I got lucky and won a couple of matches and made it into the money. Tang did well also, beating the tourney favorite Edgar Geronimo in a hill-hill match to make it to Sunday.

I lost to Dave Hemmah on the winners side and Dave ? on the losers side to go out 17-24th, and got back $100. I was thrilled just to cash. It was my first tournament in five years! Tang did a little better, finishing 9-12th. He lost to Vilmos Foldes, a strong European player visiting the U.S. for several months.

The best players like Edgar ("Edgie"), Vilmos and Santos go to nine, the next best players (Tang, Hemmah, Victor Castro) go to eight and the rest of us go to seven. Oscar's handicapping works pretty good.

I wish I could play in more but it looks like the only other stop I can make will be at Gary's Billiards in Victorville, CA. early in January. They had players come in from Phoenix, Vegas, L.A., Bakersfield, Fresno and even one guy from Lake Tahoe. Kudos to Oscar and Desiree and thanks for putting this together. West State Billiards in Los Angeles contributes $500 to the purse in each event. The winner gets $1,500, second $1,000 and third $700. Not a bad deal for a weekend event.

good news

Nice to hear some good news concerning pool tournaments and pool in general;
Congrats on your cashing, Jay........but you may be making a mistake letting us know how good you're shooting....(gonna need more weight from you now)...

I remember a long time ago, I got lucky and won a small tournament in Redwood City...........and upon returning to my home room in Daly City, I couldn't help but toot my own horn to the owner about the win, then telling him to keep it quiet about it so that it wouldn't ruin my action; the very next thing he does after I said that was to click on his mike for the room PA system, and announce to all that I had just won the Redwood City tournament.......me and my big mouth...

I've followed this tour intermittently on POVPOOL. They seem like really well run events. I also like that they switch between 9-ball and 10-ball.

Jay or anyone know who won the finals between Sambajon & Davis? Davis would have had to beat Santos 2x from my understanding, being a true dbl elimination. I'm curious as I left the stream after the Davis-Foldes match. Thanks.

I played in a few tournaments at Dee Hulse's place in Redwood City when I first came up here in the early 80's. I think it was called Executive Billiards. Also had a bit of one pocket action in there with Tony Boles. Dee had a Gold Crown that was as tight as any table around today.

Lots of good memories about that room. Sax & Evelyn Dal Porto, Al 'The Plumber' Winchinbaugh, Poker Paul and many others.

I've been keeping up on this tour and hope it continues to be successful and gains more momentum. I may have to donate $65 at Family Billiards next month.

POV Pool does a great job covering these events. Awesome to see such high level regularly on the West coast. I hope this is profitable enough venture for everyone to be able to continue the tour in years to come.

It is the West State tour, named for West State billiards supplies sponsorship.

Congrats on your finish sounds like you had a great time.

And Geronimo is a beast, that's a good win for Hoa (also a very strong player from what I've seen).

Good job Jay, we always feel good when cashing against the 'Big Boys'. Now I will have to stay away from you in nine ball and banks.

I played in the ten ball tournament they had at Hard Times Sacramento. I believe the better numbers for players showing up comes in the nine ball tournaments. I know the better players like ten ball the best, but nine ball gives the lesser players a better shot and also draws more players you have a chance with. The best players will win at ten ball for sure, and while they usually will also win the nine ball tournaments too, guys like us have a better chance to sneak in the money in nine ball IMO.

Anyway, I am happy for Oscar & Desiree and the success of the tour and will play in the next one up here in December.

Helen and Art Norris (owners of On Q Billiards) did a heck of a job in supporting their Manager son Clyde in sponsoring this event.

Desiree does all the work. Oscar is just the spokesman of the tour. ;)

Glad to see they are filling an obvious void on the west coast and hope they continue to grow.

Mezz West STATE Tour...

Right, thanks. You know my arm (inside the elbow) is sore today from all the breaking I did the last two days. I don't remember ever having this before. Guess I'm getting old, and still only 39!

Pretty crazy ending. Mike found a way to lose after having an easy 789 left he over hit the 7 and scratched after making the 8 on the hill hill game.
