"They Came in Large Numbers...."

With all his compatriots already out of the competition, Orcollo was under pressure to perform and he did just that in the final. He also thanked Filipino fans for their support. "They came in large numbers all through the tournament to lend their support. It has been a source of inspiration for me and the entire Philippines contingent."

"All the expectations was on me coming into the final," he admitted. "But I managed to cope it well and did not make any mistake, which enabled me to win the match."

Orcollo, who earlier beat Germany's Ralf Souquet in the semi-finals, was presented with the winner's trophy and a cheque for $40,000 by the president of Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation Ibrahim Abdul-Aziz al-Sahlawi. Feijen received $20,000 for his effort.

The one very unique advantage of the travelling Filipino poolplayer is that the Philippines #1 export is Skilled Manpower. This guarantees that there is a Filipino Community, in every major city in the world, that will root for them and extend hospitality like these players never left home. Rice with chicken and pork adobo anywhere in the world.

This unique advantage too is a testament of Filipino hospitality, friendliness and the popularity of pool to Filipinos.

When it comes to pool (and boxing-Manny Pacquiao and music-Arnel Pineda of Journey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89_2UivtEhs ), the Philippines rock!!:) Filipinos are generally supportive and proud of their fellow countrymen's achievements!

It is easier to reach new heights when raised on the shoulders of your friends. I'm happy for Dennis... congratulations! (I'd druther Shane had won ... if I had my druthers... but, whaddayagunnado.)

I have noticed the Filipino contingency at MANY tournaments I have attended in the past. They do hang out with the players and root for them in the venues.

I believe this is an ASSET, especially to the traveling pool player. When you've got the whole crowd rooting for you, calling your name, applauding after each good shot, I think it does help the competitor try harder. It certainly gives them a lift, IMO.

I have sometimes seen how a crowd can affect a player's caliber of play. When everybody is pulling for one player and nobody roots for their competitor, then this gives the player who is cheered for an extra boost of positive energy, I think.

In some respects, it is hard to overcome when the whole place is pulling for one player and nobody pulls for the opponent. However, I must say, as evidenced by the WPC in Philippines with Ronnie Alcano and Ralf Souquet, the Filipinos are supportive of ALL players. They recognize excellence, no matter what the person's nationality is. That's what makes the Filipino pool culture so very special! :)

I wish we'll be given a chance to do the same to every other player, from all nations, come November. Pool's re-immergence will come and we're trying hard for it to start from here.

Know of a movie scriptwriter JAM? How about a COM3 where Grady Seasons and friends return the favor by invading the Philippines and Vince or Fast Eddie Felson, with a new boy (SVB) makes an appearance close to the end of the movie? Gardy with his head bowed exclaims to his compatriot "this is a nightmare" as he raises up his head. As his eyes focus towards the door he sees who just walks in and exclaims "but its going to turn into a sweet dream soon"

it's a big advantage, alright. imagine having home court advantage anywhere in the world.....

We had an awarding dinner last night that was hosted by the Senate President and it was a blast. Alex was his usual self and was crawling under the table, to get out of the way, when it wasn't his turn to hog the spotlight. Senator Villar just couldn't help but give a bewildered look then just laugh. I guess, as Senate President, you don't expect such craziness to happen right in front of you. Senate President Manny Villar is, as always, a great host. He always enjoys his time with the BMPAP like they were just his buddies in the neighborhood. He sat and chatted with everybody AND didn't leave until all the boys have left.

Here's a picture of the awarding where Gandy got his Villards Cebu trophy while Dennis and Alex recieved Senate commendation for their achievements and in recognition of the pride that they brought the Philippines.

The media was in attendance with TV crews, photographers and reporters from ALL the major networks, dailies and tabloids! Where else in the world does pool get this kind of support?

How many you got Edwin? Every IPT event was 40% Pinoy Fans and every gambling joint from Gas Station Slots to Wynn has about 40% Pinoys working there no matter whether upstate NY in Nowhereville or in Oregon in a Casino in Nowhereville. You better do some headcounts there on the Island, I can't see you having too many left.

Oh Yeah?! Time for us to bring them in for a few days

Orcollo focuses on World 9-Ball on home turf

Tuesday, July 8, 2008
Barely two days after ruling the tough Qatar International Open 9-Ball Championship, Dennis Orcollo has set his sights on the World 9-Ball Championship scheduled in Manila in November.

Winning the world crown has always been a dream for the world?s No. 1 player. He wants to turn it into reality when the sport?s most prestigious event is held in the country for the third straight year.

?I?m just happy as well as my fellow players that the World 9-Ball will stay in our country. This should give us the psychological edge,? Orcollo said yesterday, just hours after arriving from Qatar.

The Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines is making sure that the country keeps the hosting of the world event, and is in fact close to sealing a deal with the organizers.

Perry Mariano of the BMPAP said they?re in the middle of negotiations with Matchroom Sports and ESPN. Possible venues are the World Trade Center in Pasay and the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City.

?It?s almost a done deal. The BMPAP will keep the World 9-Ball here,? said Mariano, adding that Senate President Manny Villar has already pledged his full support to the BMPAP move.

?Senator Villar, the newest benefactor of Philippine billiards, gave us the go-signal to work on it even if it entails a lot of money. We will use private money in this event,? Mariano added.

Meanwhile, Villar will file a resolution commending Orcollo for his Qatar victory.

?By winning the tournament participated by top cue artists from all over the world, Orcollo has done the Philippines proud and has shown to the world the spirit of Filipino competitiveness and excellence,? said Villar.

Orcollo captured the crown and the $40,000 top purse in the weeklong tournament after beating world no. 2 Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 13-5, in the finals.

In the World 9-Ball, a star-studded tournament previously won by Filipinos Efren Reyes, Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano, Orcollo has never gotten past the round-of-16.

This time he?s hoping for a much better result.

?He wants to go all the way this time. With his victory in Qatar, the Quezon City 9-Ball and the All-Japan Open last March, he has proven that he is the world?s No. 1 player today,? said Mariano.

?I think even the best players from the other country?s will start fearing him now,? added the BMPAP official of Orcollo, acknowledged as the country?s ?money-game king.?

Unknown to many, Orcollo almost didn?t make it to the Qatar tournament because he was not among the Filipinos that were seeded by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines.

Mariano claimed that the BSCP, the national sports association in billiards, did not give merit to Orcollo?s world ranking because they had other players in mind for the seeded list.

Mariano said even players like Django Bustamante, Roberto Gomez, Reyes and Pagulayan were not given priority, too.

?But Orcollo was willing to go through the final qualifying tournament set June 27 to 29 in Qatar. It was only in the last minute that he was seeded because of sudden vacancies,? he added.

Mariano said Reyes and Bustamante almost didn?t make it to Qatar because the BSCP allegedly said it could no longer shoulder the airfare of the two legendary players.

Aristeo ?Putch? Puyat, according to Mariano, came to the rescue.

?It?s unbelievable for our best players to barely make it to Qatar. Even if the organizers wanted Alcano, Gomez and Orcollo to be seeded, the BSCP had others in mind,? Mariano said.

?It was pure vindication on the BMPAP players? part that Dennis won the title.? ? Abac Cordero

Yeah, we do. We put them in our BCA's Hall of Fame for recognition of their achievements, players from around the world, not just Americans.

"Try again"? I never said the BCA Hall of Fame was a government-issued commendation, and neither did you.

Let's have a little verbatim recap. Here is what you wrote in the style of no uppercase letters, sometimes a revealing writing trait on forums for some, not all, posters: whatever happened to humility?? i dont see the u.s. giving commendations to pool players that win world championships. or other nations for that matter...

Here is my response: Yeah, we do. We put them in our BCA's Hall of Fame for recognition of their achievements, players from around the world, not just Americans.

And let's not forget the smiley face at the end of my reply: ":) "

The BCA represents the U.S. pool, and as such, I replied in kind. I was not referring to the Federal Government of the United States of America. If that is what you were referring to, please be more descriptive in your posts, so that the readers of this forum will provide a satisfactory answer to you.

what does my writing style reveal?? i would like your professionally merited opinion and how you came to that conclusion.

secondly, a government official filing a 'resolution' commending someone is not the same as the BCA HOF...last i heard, none of the BCA board members are government officials-- if i'm wrong, my bad. i didnt realize that manny villar was only a billiards representative--i thought he was a real goverment official. and the BCA does not represent all of America's pool...they are just one of the bigger organizations. APA actually has more members.

thirdly, my first response was a rhetorical question. but i guess i should've said as such, so that people dont get defensive and have a heart attack when someone else has an opinion about something. i didnt realize this forum provided all facts and no opinions (sarcasm).

jeez...some people's kids:rolleyes: :scratchhead:

Villar backs hosting of world pool tilt

Senate President Manny Villar has expressed his full support to the country's bid to host the World Pool Championship (WPC) for the third straight year.

Villar, who has become Philippine billiard's biggest benefactor with his all-out support to the sport, said the effort to keep the most prestigious pool tournament in the world is expected to provide more opportunities to the country?s cue artists and demonstrate once again the country?s hospitality.

"Bringing in international tournaments like this World Pool Championship would help more local players to excel," said Villar during the victory party he hosted for newly-crowned 2008 Qatar 9-Ball Open champion world No.1 Dennis Orcollo Monday night at the Teriyaki Boy restaurant in StarMall EDSA.

"Plus, it will further boost our image as the epicenter of billiards, and the top producer of world-class cue artists," said Villar.

The Philippines hosted the last two staging of the WPC and had an option to host the 2008 edition until Raya Sports, the local organizer, waived the rights because it is no longer interested in running the event.

But Matchroom Sport, which owns the WPC, found no other country willing to host the event prompting the UK-based firm to offer it back to the Philippines through the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP).

Despite reports that the local organizers did not earn profit during the previous hosting, Villar still vowed to pour out resources for the hosting of the prestigious tournament.

"What is important now is to help the sports by hosting big tournaments in the country where our own players will be given chances to showcase their skills and talents," Villar said.

"Hindi mahalaga ang kita(trans: Profit is not important). We?re not here to earn but to help billiards and the Philippine sports in general."

BPMAP president Atty. Vic Rodriguez said officials Matchroom are set to arrive on Thursday to discuss the final details and possibly seal the deal for the country?s hosting of the WPC in November.

"With Senate President Villar around, we are hoping to get positive results during our meeting with Matchroom Sports officials," Rodriguez said.

"Villar reiterated his continued support to billiards with the holding of the third leg of the Manny Villar Cup on July 23-25 in Bulacan and the fourth leg in Davao City next month.

"Aside from boxing, billiards is another sports where we always bring honor to the country and we have to sustain that momentum," Villar said.

BMPAP, Matchroom and ESPN are still in discussion but it, 2008 WPC Manila) is likely to happen. Just need to iron out some details of the agreement. What's 100% sure is Senate President Manny Villar's all-out support.

10-Ball? Haven't heard anything about it lately and it's getting late. Players from other countries need to make travel arrangements soon and there still is no definite report about the 10-Ball event. I'm not really following developments from that though because we do have something for Oct 7-13.
