Things you dont miss, after you stopped playing leagues

We have an in-house 9-ball money league... no handicap... 3-person teams but no team payouts... each person plays the other team's players three games each for a total of 9 games played per evening per person... match total is 27 games... only individual stats are kept... $1 per game won and $1 per 9-ball snap... all money paid out at the end of the session... two sessions per year... each one ending in a 2-day double elimination singles tournament... everybody cashes in the tournaments. It's a great league and the competition is a notch or so below the best shooters in the PNW.

For those of you that know Ford, he and Rose run the league.

the long commutes, the commutes with the drunks, the dealing with drunks, and my personal favorite the whining and moaning of the players as they begin to lose, or the atmosphere of a cocky player unable to entertain a losing player socially.

Never seen any non leage shooters acting like this, ever.

If we are talking about a pool league than I guess it depends on where you play.

I've had my fill of High-fivin'! Since when is pool a contact sport?

I got to hate bowling in leagues for the same reason - them wackos want to touch you after every ball. That's twice a frame, 10 frames a game, 3 games a night... Pulllease!

I'm just not a touchy feely kinda guy. In fact, I stopped going to church when they started asking people to grab hands with the folks sitting around them.

No leagues for me. I don't like having one night a week tied up since a lot of my social outings are random and last minute things. I am not a big fan of the sandbagging and all the social talky talky aspects of leagues either. Time is short. When I go to play it is to play, not spend half the night standing around waiting to play or talking about playing.

was on an apa 8 ball team back in the 90!s that won the national championship. everybody on the team cheated except me. I was a 7. made me sick when they pranced around like they had done something. only thing they did good was the art of laying down. thats what apa is all about when you get to the finals and most everyone knows it. team i play on now is not going to win a national championship but we dont cheat.

My team won the trip to vegas but it turned out that our local operator was keeping all the money for himself and not turning it in so we got squat.

He did end up doing some time though.

Yea its up north lol. Its about 30 miles north of Grand Rapids, Mich And yea it usta have a pool hall, and still kinda does lol. LEgacy billiards is still up there its just closed, but my friend, knows the owner and we go there and shot on thier 9ft tables, if we dont feel like playing on his 7ft.

And as for what they do in the winter? I plan on making naked snow angels WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!

Since your a SL6 or something along those lines, guess you get to toss some weight out once you get up north! :) As I havent had the opportunity to play as a SL, I should start out getting some weight!

When you arriving?

Perk,

YOU GET NOTHING FROM ME!!!!! well maybe you get to break once or twice lol.

I'll be up there about April 15 or 16. So you better get tuned up, cuz I am out for blood lol.

And yes I know what you mean about the people who sandbag and end up underrated by 1 or 2 levels and then go around prancing after they beat a someone who is actually trying. When it wasnt even close to being a fair match.

But hey, it'll all be over in a few weeks :D

What I don't miss about playing league...

-Players who do not know the rules.

-The poor sports that have childish temper tantrums. (I'm held "hostage" and must stay there all night and watch this!)

-Players who act like they are playing an ESPN match for $1,000,000, take 2 minutes to aim for each and every shot, and then miss most shots. (I'm held "hostage" and must watch this!)

-Having to show up for a league match a long distance away during bad weather / bad driving conditions. I would prefer to play it safe and stay home.

-League operators who are on a "power trip". Make things difficult for teams they don't like (teams which win and they personally are not playing on).

-Poor communications skills of league operators and team captains. They tend to not notify all players of canceled tournaments or tournaments which have moved to another location, etc. (Many times they do not have the phone numbers of all players on their team!)

Or maybe there is a special two day tournament sponsored by the league...
Team captain: "Want to play in the [whatever] 2 day tournament?
Me: "Sure! What time does it start?"
Team captain: "I don't know!"
Me: "What is the address of the place holding the tournament?"
Team captain: "I don't know! I'm not sure if it will be at this place or that place. It was at this place last year, but I think they are moving it somewhere else this year. Here is the flyer I got in the team packet..."
Me: I look at the flyer and it does not give an address nor does it give a starting time. Arrrgggg!

League

Leagues are fine as long as you understand what it is you are there to do and what you are joining. I've heard enough about complaining about slop or what-not from people I play with and against, but those are the rules and they accept to play by them when they join so it's not like it comes as a big surprise. I joined a team for something to do and it's provided a pretty good time for me. There are some bad people (besides cheating) that will be there, but no more than what you'll find playing in a bar.

I do agree that it does suck to have to sit around for hours to play 1 match (which is why I dropped an 8-ball only night) or not at all, so I take that into consideration by allowing people to take nights off, leave early, etc.

What I wouldn't miss would be the cost of going out every Tuesday, writing the team's check every Tuesday and a few of the rules - most of the rest I can deal with.

What I would miss would be playing random people (including people I haven't played before), playing serious games of pool (bar can get boring), being able to rate my abillity and teaming up with my friends.

And as a side note, half of my team has come to give each other crap and boo ourselves - no high-fives here unless you do something damn nice. :D

Heavy cigarette smoke in some of the locations. The late/late nights and having to go to work the next day. The rotation system in some leagues that can have you wait 8 or 9...8-ball games before its your turn, with some of the games lasting 15-20 minutes or more:eek:
League operators that will not "$ disclose $" payout figure percentages, and added monies, and you find out at the end of season, even if your team wins you don't come close to breaking even for dollars spent, but they said you would make money. Politics.
I did like making new friends and seeing old friends, some good laughs, good run outs and when two teams played and played hard with both teams enjoying 'real' competition, tho that was not always the norm.
Pool is really no different than what life dishes out, but the alcohol factor can make some nights good or really bad.

I suppose this is just my opinion, but POOL IS NOT A TEAM SPORT/GAME!!!
Neither is golf or tennis, but some of the most exciting matches are played during Ryder Cup, Davis Cup, and pool's own Mosconi Cup.
