Thinking About a Cue Change... Looking for Opinions

Currently, I have a Jerico Stinger J/B cue (ebony version). I like it just fine and have no complaints about it. It jumps and breaks pretty darn well.

That being said, I was thinking about going to a dedicated break cue and dedicated jump cue. I would imagine that they would just do the job better, being specifically designed for one type of shot instead of one cue for multiple specialty shots and all (not that the break is a "specialty" shot... but you catch my drift, right?).

I'm pretty sure that the jump cue I would end up pursuing would be a Lomax. I have read TONS of great things about his jump cues and am pretty sure that they are about the best out there.

As for the break cue... I'm not sure. I see great reviews about the BK2, Mezz Power Break 2/Pro, OB Break, etc... Or would it be better to go with a Lomax break cue as well? I haven't seen much info on his break cue and, if it hits as well as the other popular break cues, it would be nice to see about getting a matching set from him. They really are great looking cues. From a production cue perspective, I would be leaning toward the BK2 w/sport wrap or the Power Break Pro.

Would it be worth going away from the J/B to two separate cues? If not, I'll stick with what I have... It's one of the best J/Bs out there. If it is worth it, what are your thoughts on the break cue... BK2, Power Break Pro, Matching Lomax set?... or maybe something else that I haven't mentioned.

Any feedback or opinions would be much appreciated.

I just ordered Lomax matching break and jump cues to match my Lomax playing cue so, of course, I think that is the way to go. And, as you said, Steve makes top quality and great looking cues. And yes, I think most cue makers will tell you that there is some compromise in proformance when ordering one cue to be both a break and a jump cue. Just my thoughts.

If you want to spend the money go ahead. Sounds like you are just looking to justify your purchase. Unless you have specific requirements like a non phenolic break tip your present j/b cue is fine.

There is a thread showing Lomax's cues that he just finished for John Brumback (JBKY on here). John is going to use them in the upcoming DCC.
 
I love my Power Break with the exception of the phenolic tip. My suggestion would be if you're are going to get the Power Break get the tip changed to Samsara. I have a friend who has the BK2 and another friend who has the OB break. I cannot control the CB with either of those break cues but they seem to work well for both of them. I seem to jump the CB off table a lot more often with the OB and run the ball around the table 4 rails with the BK2 whereas with my Mezz I can squat the CB mid table almost every time (even with phenolic). These cues are all different and my suggestion would be to try them out (maybe at SBE) if you're able to, before you buy. I knew right off the bat when I was at SBE last year when I broke my first rack at the OB table that I didn't like it. Also tried the BK2, and didn't like it. I didn't even try the Mezz but I saw that Benfica was selling one for a fair price and I just bought it. Glad I did!!

As far as jump cues go. Jacoby makes a pretty solid/reasonable jump cue but I have heard that noone makes a better jumper than Lomax. I don't really use a jump cue to often but when I do, it's usually friends Poison, or another friends Predator Air, both of which do the job pretty good!
 
I'm not trying to hijack this thread so please forgive me for the intrusion. I've been out of the game a while but when I played, the bungee jumper was the most popular jump cue around. Are these previously mentioned jumpers clearly superior to my old bungee? I've never seen or heard of a lomax.

Hello,I'm going to say you will not be disapointed in a matching SET of Steve Lomax cues.If you or anybody else are going to be at the DCC you'll be more than welcome to try mine. I don't really see how any break cue or jump cue could be any better,IMHO. I do have to say that I am a player rep for Steve but I'm just sayin...Thanks and good luck with your next purchase.John Brumback
 
I have heard that Steve Lomax makes the best jump cue hands down. I have not heard much about his break cue, but im sure its top of the line. If i had the money i would definitely buy i set from Steve.

Being a player rep for Steve, It's understandable that you would be partial to his equipment.

That said, you are a player... a pretty darn good one who is going to the DCC (good luck, by the way), and you must have tried other break cues before, right?

Might you be able to comment on how the Predator, Mezz, OB, or any others compare to the Lomax? What is your favorite break cue other than the Lomax, and in what ways do you like Steve's better? Also, do you know how much Steve is charging these days for his jumps, breaks and matching sets? I know it would depend on the level of detail and customization, but I would be looking for something pretty simple. Any ballpark on a starting point would be helpful.

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm in Southern CA and don't get a chance to take much Vacation time. It's rare that I find an opportunity to go to a show and test hit a bunch of cues that I might be interested in... especially when it comes to custom work like Steve turns out. I have no choice but to do 95% of my research online and try to go from there. Heck, I don't even think there is a place within 50-100 miles where I can hit a Predator, Mezz and/or OB side by side... and those are all production cues!

All of the info and opinions are much appreciated.

The Predator BK2 is the best break cue I've every used. Predator backs up their warranties as well. I had the shaft split from the ferrule and sent it to them; even with no proof of purchase they sent a replacement a week later.

As far as a jump cue, I jump with my BK2. :p

Steve Lomax is a custom cue maker (one of the best in the business). FYI
I've never used a lomax jump or break but I have heard nothing but great things about them. Steve does exceptional work with anything in regards to pool so I HIGHLY doubt the break cues or jump cues are any less than exceptional.
 
I have had all the break cues you have asked about except the Lomax and I think hands down the OB break cue is the best. I feel like it is by far the easiest break cue I have ever used to get a good firm break and still control the cue ball. Just keep in mind it doesnt matter how hard you hit the balls if you cant control the rock enough to see the first ball.
 
remember the hardest hitting cue doesn't mean its the best break cue.......there is more to consider besides strength of hit.........it all depends on what YOU need specifically as a player.
