I don't know what your needs are in a home but you will save a lot of money if you get just 20 minutes further away from Metro Atlanta. Those bedroom communities can be pricey, though there are no doubt still some deals available.
I chose to live 80-100 miles west of Atlanta. Moved here from Dallas, TX. My utility bills out here are 10% of what they were in Dallas and I got three times the home for my money that I could have gotten either in Dallas or in the Atlanta metro.
There some factory jobs in the area. Some carpet mills up in the Cartersville area and further north. Lots of service and hospitality jobs, lots of car dealers who need salesmen, lots of retail jobs.
The towns that surround Atlanta like Marietta, Douglasville, Acworth, Villa Rica, etc, make Atlanta a place you do not need to go. I have lived here for 11 years and have never been to downtown Atlanta.
