Thinking of buying a drum sander

One of my immediate uses will be sanding the last .010" back side of newly cut inlay profiles to break them free like Rick from Esoteric Cues showed me. My concern is can I sand phenolic, bone, and synthetic stone without loading up the sanding drum?

Also if anyone in the midwest area has one for sale, let me know.

yes just hook up a dust collector and you should be fine.. also get yourself an abrassive belt cleaning stick and you'll be fine.

I just read it and I got 3/16 , but It looks like on the up down crank theirs two nuts , just take one off . I'm sure I could squeeze more out of it , a little modding thats all.

Where did you see 3/16? below is the page from the manual that shows 1/4"

I see what you are referring to about the nuts though.

dan, i have this one, was $500 when i bought it new at rocklers,
price went up apparently
http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=17140&filter=performax
i can run veneers thru it to approx.12/1000ths if i want to

these have been showing up on craigslist occasionally
have you checked craigslist??????????????????

when i first got it i was using the belts that rockler sells,
220 grit, i think they are about $40 for 5 ????
220 was too fine for my use
switched to 120 and 80

klingspor ( thank you joe baker) sells 3" wide rolls of the sandpaper,
you can get 11 pieces out of it, by using one of the originals as a "template" to cut the new belt
if memory serves me, it's about $35 for the rolls
saves me quite a bit, because i use this sucker, i mean i USE it

oily woods like ebony & cocobolo tend to load up the belt,
so i'll do everything else first THEN do my oily woods last,
knowing it's going to wipe out the belt
but for $3 a belt, i can live with that

i've ran delrin, corian, sheets of phenolic,
sheets of brass, moose antlers, steel
and damn near everything EXCEPT synthetic stone thru the sander
it's my workhorse

after a whole day of jimmy lee using it to make inlay slabs at my shop with my sander,
i finished off the day with this ebony, that trashed the belt
so we got 100's of feet of material sanded for $3

if you dont find a sander anytime soon,
get with me, box up your materials, and send it to me
i'll run everything thru the sander for you to your desired thicknesses

Looks like Amazon has it with free shipping.

That's a great tip on saving the oily woods for last on the belts. I've been doing some searching on craigslist in northern IL and southern WI but nothing that I'm interested in has showed up yet. I guess I'll have to save my pennies for the Jet.

Thanks for all the great imput guys.

I found the Perfomax version of that on CL. I ended up trading a Hitachi router and a few bucks for it. Overall I got a pretty good deal considering what they cost new. I don't know why those things are so pricey. I think the sanding wheel is gold or something. They are also deceptively heavy. Come in handy though.

I have the little larger 16 X 32 Performax that works well. I bought it, little used, on Craigslist for 600.00 which is less than half of list price. I only use it for sanding point inlays once I have them squared up going through the jointer. I have never used it to release inlays after cutting as I have an other way of mounting and cutting which I feel is easier to accomplish this task. I hook a Rigid, 6 HP 12 gal. shop vac to it when using but it helps very little in collecting the dust. It is powerful but it doesn't move enough air. I have a large dust collecting system that move a lot of air that would work well but I have never got the machine positioned correctly so as to be hooked into the duct work as I use it so seldom. Brent's idea of doing oily woods last would probably be helpful as cocobolo ruins a belt very quickly.

I now see where you saw 3/16". that is what they have printed in their catalog.
I think those nuts are the stops for raising it so removing one of them wouldn't make it go lower but I suppose even if you couldn't mod it you could use a carrier board of some type to sand the top piece thinner.
I may have to try one of them.

Delta

I use a delta x5 and love it.
As far as the thickness limitation, you can use a "carrier" board for very thin pieces. Use carpet tape, or sacrifice the very end to glue or other clamping solutions. The last method I use is a vacuum clamp. Since the end is open, the hose isnt in the drum. The vacuum is the last resort as its a pain in the ars to set up and get a perfect result. My preferred method is the sacrafice, because it stays perfectly flat.

I was just looking at this model, and what I find interesting is that if you put your mouse over the 4th picture from the left, then go straight over the larger image above the small thumbnails, the zoom feature kicks in. On that image, it changes to a beige unit and on the on/off red tab, it says 'Shop Fox' on it....

I wish they had real time stock on their webpage, This model is out of stock till the 3rd of March

They’re out there if you look hard enough. I found this guy in a rummage sale listing 2 hours away. I picked it up for $425.

It came with 2 new conveyor belts ($35 a piece), 2 cleaning sticks ($15) a piece, & 30+ precut sand paper rolls ($3 a piece).

If you deduct the extras, that puts me at $235 for a sander with very little use. Very happy.
