Thinner butt cues

I am a huge fan of cues that have a slightly thinner butt, somewhere around 1.00 +/- at the top of the grip and 1.23 at the butt cap. here are some pictures of the thin handle cues I own. Also post pictures of cues you have with thinner butts and post the cue makers you know of that make a cue with a thinner butt.

Believe it or not an Eddie Wheat cue, I only bought this because of its dimensions and yes the cue does hit very well and has a nice thin handle and is a lighter cue which I like.

Robinson cues. What does the handle measure at the top of the grip and at the bottom of the butt? that is a great lookinn cue

Hi Patrick,

All my cues have a thinner butt than the regular production cues. I make them a little thinner because it alows the stroke to be a little longer and smooth due to the fact you don't play with a "log" in your hands.

It also alows me never to have to use weight screws. It enables me to use natural weight and balance.

All my butts have a straight taper and measure exactly 21mm (about 0.827") at the joint and 31.5mm (about 1.240") at the butt cap. They are all exactly 73.5 cm long (about 28.94") which is just a little longer than usual.

I standardly make diameter near the bumper about 31.0-31.5 mm (1.220-1.240").

Probably a habit. Cues for Russian billiards is more thin than Pool cues, about 27-29 mm (1.060-1.142"). Therefore diameter of 32 mm (1.26") seems too big for me.:)

I looked at the pics and I hope I am not out of line for asking this question in public instead of using a pm and if I am, I apologize in advance.

Are the rings on the Eddie Wheat cue real or do they look like a sharpie or a magic market or some type of coloring aid was used?

Not a very good picture, but the bocote/zircote cue is my player. .830 at the joint, 1.22 at the bottom, and 60" long.

You are not out of line at all asking that question. I by all means know the controversy and questionable craftsmanship that surrounds Eddie Wheat cues. This cue has a very nice hit due to its dimensions and balance and wood choice.
Rating for this cue 10 being the best work money can buy and 1 being a cue made with no expertise or attention to detail
Ratings -
- Finish / 5
- Rings for their clarity and sharpness rate at a / 5
- Linen wrap / 5
- Wood / 10 + some of the best quilted maple you will every see and has a good resonance when hitting the cue ball.
- Dimensions / 10 +
Overall rating for this cue would be 7 due to its great playability and amazing wood.

Check this out and tell me your opinion.
It looks to me it is some type of phenolic and maple ring work, I am no expert though.

Eddie Wheat cue
There are some flaws in the rings on some of the black bleeding a little bit. Overall the wood is amazing in this cue, some of the best quilted maple I have ever seen. I was lucky enough to buy this of PROG8R and didn't have to deal with Eddie Wheat or get caught up in the drama surrounding his cues. This cues specs are 0.830 inch's at joint, 0.98 inch's at top of grip, 1.20 inch's at bottom of but cap. It really has a sweet thickness and a somewhat minimal cone/straight taper on butt.

wanna no why they look like they bleeding? eddie boy used a sharpee or a magik marka.he aint talented enuff 2 do better. he is a con artist who lives off of grandmas ss check and claims t 2 a cuesmith and a pool playa.....
do sum home work or better yet get a razor and scrape them rings off i guarantee u the ink will come off...they aint real rings bud...

Leon Sly. Don't have pics of mine but I should measure the butt. I have small hands and I do prefer a smaller diameter butt. I had to word that carefully, still don't think it came out right.
 
Straycat, I have read many of your comments on Eddie Wheat and understand your frustrations. Please with the utmost respect to you can we limit this thread from becoming an Eddie Wheat bash-a-thon. Regardless if the rings are sharpie or not that does not bother me. I bought the cue for it's dimensions and wood. By all means I would not risk ordering a cue from Eddie Wheat directly due to all the drama surrounding him but this cue was offered to me at a hell of a price and it was worth every penny I payed for it no matter who the cue maker was. I am not in any way defending Eddie Wheat.

is it cored with maple?

The wood (quilted maple) is stunning. I saw a couple of forearms like this when I went to his shop.
As far as the rings......well, I have my doubts that they are real. I also asked a couple of cuemakers to take a look at your pics and they feel the same way.
Like you said though this thread is not about bashing anyone.

You have some nice cues and I hope you enjoy them.

No worries at all Straycat, I really must say i have throughly enjoyed reading all your posts regarding Eddie Wheat cues :)
 
I couldn't stop thinking about the Eddie Wheat cue and the rings. I ended up putting the cue under my micro scope to take a closer look. Here is my conclusion. -
In magnifying it I could see that Eddie builds his rings like this:
Step one:
He takes phenolic disc that is cut thin and installs it which would look like a single thin black ring
Step two
Then he installs a maple disc that is 3-4 mm thick like a plain maple ring
Step three
Then he installs another black phenolic disc.
Step four
This is where he cheats, he etches out a square section and fills it with some sort of black nail polish or even what some people where saying simply a sharpie, any way it is some black filling. I imagine he tapes off the maple ring and applies the nail polish and lets it dry, after that her applies a finish. I can assure you that the Eddie Wheat cue I have has rings that are not made from a billet.

Question about it being cored.
From what I can tell it is not cored but not 100% positive. It doesn't feel as stiff as a cored cue feels.
