Hog oiler patent image
U.S. Patent 1,241,023

A hog oiler was a mechanical device employed on farms to be used by hogs to provide relief from insects and offer skin protection. It consisted of a reservoir to hold oil, and a means to distribute the oil onto the hog, often via grooved wheels or cylinders. Hogs seeking relief would rub up against a wheel (or cylinder) causing it to rotate and dispense oil onto their bodies.

Hog oilers were produced in a variety of designs, most made of cast iron. The era of innovation for this device was mainly the years 1913-1923; during this time some 20 patents were issued by the U.S. Patent Office.

Hog oilers are now considered desirable antiques by collectors of agricultural equipment.

hmmmm

I guess the greased pig contests started shortly after somebody tried to catch one of these oiled hogs!

Funny story about catching a hog. A friend of mine turned loose the runt of the litter to fend for himself. Soon he was the biggest of the litter but he missed a little matter attended to on the others and was soon a big boar hog running around with healthy tusks on him. The owner and I were scratching our heads about catching him because there just isn't much to rope on a pig and grabbing aholt of this boar just didn't seem smart.

Boone, the owner's seven year old son, claimed he could catch the hog. We laughed at him. He took a running jump and wrapped around a hind leg of Thanksgiving, the name I had given the hog threatening to steal him for a thanksgiving hog roast. Apparently this wasn't the first time Boone had caught the hog. He squealed loud and long but didn't turn on the child or seriously fight to get away. Having mean little boys around a farm is handy sometimes, the boar knew who was boss!
