....the router bit falls out of the router at 20,000+ rpm.....Good thing I have a lexan box around the router for dust collection. Possibly saved me some blood and stiches. Was just starting the second pass when it started to vibrate and then 'bang' the 1-1/2" dia. cutter was now a spinning top inside the box.
Sucky part is now the V groove cutting party has been postponed until the replacement arrives. The new one will be 1/2" shank and tightened properly :D.

This might be dumb question of the day, but, How far in the collet was the tool ?
Was the tool all the way to the collet flange face?
Just wanting to know.
I am glad you are OK and not hurt in any way.

It wasn't in all the way, I need to adjust the mount so it can go deeper. It was in about 5/8" and I thought I tightened it tight, but....I guess I was wrong.
The maple forearm took a beating.

Ouch!! happy to hear that You were not hurt, That looks like It could have turned nasty real quick like. I'm always afraid of something like that happening.

something like that could kill you, i covered my entire lathe with 1/4 inch plexiglass.
 
I've had a straight bit come out before but it just dropped straight down, but this one bounced and spun. The collet/nut assembly on the router doesn't look damaged but may buy another just to be safe.
 
That's a scary thought. Glad you are safe. I have nicked myself with almost every tool I have, from chainsaw to tablesaw, except for the router. Those things scare me. I run an 80cc chainsaw with 2' bar all day long with trees falling here & there, and it doesn't bother me a bit. But I cringe every time I have to turn on even a laminate trimmer.

I have the same healthy respect of routers. I constructed this box to get the dust/chips out and keep bad things in...lol.
It's 1/4" lexan sides and 1/2" lexan for the hose end. I used lexan as it's shatterproof and pretty much bulletproof. It's a bit more expensive, but worth it IMO.
