This Is What Ruins My Runouts

I hose up alot of runouts because I miss shots I should make. The attached is a classic example. Ray Charles could have made the 6B. It was a slight cut to my right and I said to myself just hit it a hair on the left side and it will go. So I did, and I missed. The dotted line is where I missed. The CB drifted over to my left so I was certain I had made the shot. But I missed.

Anything I can do to prevent this utter stupidity from happening?

No easy shots.

Yep 100% focus on execution every time. One lapse of concentration or one iota of laziness and s##t can happen. The worst part is, I could almost guarantee that OP (or me, you, anyone) could set that shot up and make it 10/10 times. One lapse is all it takes and you've sold the farm. 🥶

Totally agree.

I saw Efren miss this shot on the 6B once in Reno at the Sands Regency tournament.

I also saw Efren scratch in the side pocket on this shot at the Sands Regency tournament in Reno.

Everyone misses shots they 'should' make because no shot is 100%. U can make a fortune betting players on shots with payouts according the percentage they think they make the shot at.

Truth is, that if you only hit shots u make 90% of the time in a rack of 10ball, you still only runout about 1/3 racks. Our threshold for 'should make' is likely well short of 90% so yes, many many racks end on us missing a shot we should make.

No secret sauce. Develop a reliable stroke, maintain focus, and hit the practice table hard to inch up your actual make %. After all that, you will still end many runs on balls you should make, just not as often. As you pointed out, that kinda stuff even happens to prime Efren.

Players who consistently miss shots that they should make while running balls usually do so because they change their pace. In most cases, they tend to speed up and skip parts of their pre shot routine. Speeding up during a run and taking short cuts in their routine is a common mistake made by amateurs.

Another reason for missing easy shots during run is that the player starts to become too conscious of the fact that he's on a run and focuses more on that aspect, distracting himself from the shot at hand by focusing too much internally and not enough externally on the shot in front of him.

A third possibility is that a player starts to feel pressure and slows his pace down, making himself second guess himself and start to become tentative.

In all three cases, you should always be aware of your normal pace and strive for it under all circumstances. One of my mantras for myself when I used to compete is "Find your rhythm."

This looks like one of those "subconcious" misses.....Here is what I mean.....Most likely you were hitting a stun/stop type shot to keep the CB above the 7 or at least higher up on the 7 to make it easier to get on the 8. Subconciously you felt like you were going to lose CB to the rail below the 7....You were not sure you could hold the CB and you subconciously "adjusted" to hold the CB and the thicker hit resulted in a miss.

It may have been as subtle as you aimed correct but let up on the shot ever so slight (in an effort to hold the CB) resulting in a thicker hit.

I typically have this happen when trying to execute a break out shot....I basically split my focus and focus so much on the break out shot that I miss the shot.......I think it stems from a unconcious or subconcious adjustment.

The end result is always....."How did I miss THAT!!"

A lot of times when I don't want the cb to drift sideways too much I'll miss the shot fat, and not just because I'm cheating the pocket.

I had a coach once, a very, very amazing player. Perhaps as good at his peak as anyone of the greats we see today. I remember asking him about this very thing once, and what he said. He said,

"Garo, just remember this one thing: The most important thing about never missing, and blowing your run-out, is what you are thinking about, and where your mind is, at the instant the tip hits the cue ball."

Yeah, that's what I loved about Tony Drago's style of play. Talk about a pace! :) lol But, he still managed to miss, once in a while.
