Excuse me if I'm a little slow boys but...somebody please explain to me why a room owner would make participants in a bar table tournament have to put quarters in the table for each game?

Why would the owner not just open the tables so that it is so much easier and also because it would leave a good taste in the player's mouths to want to come back next time they have a tournament.

I must admit...I am totally baffled!
 
You probably want free drinks as well. How do you expect the room owner to make money? They are not in the business to give you a free place to play. They are there to provide entertainment at a cost that hopefully covers their nut and make them a little money.

I assumed that you would figure out that I knew that they wanted to make money by having people put quarters in their bar boxes.

What I am saying is...why don't they add another ten or twenty bucks to their entry fee and leave the tables open...or thirty bucks if need be.

If they're playing a race to 9 winners and 7 losers. Just figure out what the average amount of games played for that format and add that to the entry fee.

you clearly did not mention collecting a greens fee. i thought the same exact thing as gutshot based on your first post.

that being said after your 2nd post. i agree with you there. easier to just collect a greens fee and open the table.

i also think you owe gutshot an apology because your first post made it seem like you wanted to play for free.
 
also, the owner of the bar may not be the owner of the pool table. he may not be able to just open the table up and collect greens fees. usually the vendor and the owner of the bar split the quarters and there is a counter in the table for everytime the quarters are pushed in.
 
because a $20 or $30 greens fee per player would never equal the same amount that the owner could get by $1\game, especially some of the bigger tourneys.

1 single game of race to 9 that goes hill hill @ $1\game is $17. a 128+ man tourney can result in thousands of dollars in table fee.

now for a little bar table tourney of 32 players, yes greens fees makes sense.

How does it not make sense even for a bigger tourney if the owner just figures what the average amount of games is for whatever the race is to? If the average amount of games is 14 for a race to nine, then figure $14.00!

If it is 15...then figure $15.00. If you're the owner and you're not sure, put it as high as you like. The point is, most players would rather pay a little extra rather than have to hassle with getting quarters and putting them in the machine.

Heck...the owner should make more money on the deal if he wants to bump it up a little just to make sure he doesn't lose.

Again boys...this ain't rocket science.
 
Since the vast majority of pool players are total nits, most of them don't want to throw $20 or so for greens fees b/c they says its too high. The 2 and out type players that make up the majority of the fields are losing out the most by having greens fees. That equates to fewer entries as time goes on. Even big national tournaments people cry around about paying $30-$50 in greens fees.

Like others have said, a lot of those tables are owned by vendors that will go ape $hit if they see the tables open.

Is that smart enough for you smart guy?
 
No...not so smart guy! But it will do in a pinch! I've already talked to numerous people and the overwheling response has been that they would rather pay extra and have the tables open rather than worry about a few bucks and have to manage quarters.
 
Open your own room with your own tables and run tournaments any way you see fit. Problem solved. You might also want to limit the tournament to only rocket scientists. Might want to extend that qualification to all of your customers :grin::grin::grin:
