Payback is most gratifying when served cold.
I used to make my way over to Johnson City in the early 90's. That's Tennessee, not to be confused with Johnston City. Anyway, there was an uppity poolroom that there was not very much action in. So I thought. Well, I was there one night and a shall we say, a very Mama's boy was taking bets right there at the bar on Tennessee playing I think it was LSU. Stack of cash beside him, he was very loud and proud of his Vols. So, I was literally probably the only person that was for LSU in the joint. So, I was trying to get him to play some pool. I bet fifty on LSU getting 2 1/2.
Well, at halftime he confronts me about the pool. "I got a guy that will play you some. Frank." Well, we all have a guy. I decline. "I'll play you some, not someone you can call. We all have a friend." "Alright, I'll take the seven, eight and the break." Now I'd seen this guy play, and he rarely could get out if there was anything tough involved. So, I figured once I got him gambling, we'd work our way into "my" game. So, I agreed to the game. We'd play a race to seven for $200. A lot of weight, and a short race. My theory was I would either win at this, or adjust to where I could win. With all the talk, I figured we'd play for quite a while.
Well, three sevens, one nine and one combo on the eight. He beat me 7-6. I say, "Flip it." "What, you beat me on the LSU. I beat you on the pool. I'm keeping your money. You can't play and I'm gonna have a steak on you." He's laughing and talking and "high fiving." There was quite the crowd to cheer against me, since I was the LSU guy. I offered the six, seven and the break. NO doing. "I'm just laughing at you, coming in here trying to take our money. See you later. Why don't you just leave?"
Well, I went back twice more, only to be made fun of and laughed at for getting beat. The actual spot didn't come up, just the loss. His crowd really enjoyed this guy. I guess he was the head of the party, 'cause they loved him. I couldn't take it. I had to devise a way of payback. And he wasn't about to match up with me. In comes Bobby. Now, Bobby is a good friend of mine and probably could give me the eight if we ever got down to it.
So, I send Bobby in on a Saturday night. Vols were playing South Carolina. Bobby has the whole layout and line. He plays some $5 a game with some of the guys and gets louder and louder. He also flashes around $4200 ( I know this, because I gave it to him.) Eventually he starts barking at momma's boy. Well, in his pink over white double Izod wearing self, he comes with "I'll take the seven, eight and break and bet anything you want." Long story short, no short races (that was my rule going in), and no less than $500. Well, he played $100 a game and then $200, and then caught gear. $2000 later, Izod man quit (now, I've worn Izod also but don't know a better name at this point). Bobby calls me.
"Hey, are you ever gonna give me a shot at my money back?" I yelled out at Coolbreeze. "I didn't think so. Well, that's ok. We're gonna go have a steak on you, this time." Bobby counts everything out right there on the table they just played on.
"You should have played me some more. Oh well. Thanks. Outback Bobby?" "Yeah, sounds good." Coolbreeze just sat there listening to his friends beg him to match up some more. Hey, I can only take so much. At least I didn't stab him. He can keep the $150 he won from me. I'll take the grand.
