So I started back playing pool three weeks ago....Since then I have bought a Joss JOS04 and a Lucasi LHF 11....Now I know this is no where near the money you guys have in the cues you own but I can see this being a problem....I am already looking at new shafts, Custom Cues....I see this becoming my new addiction like guns...Is this a natural phenomenon...lol

If you want it to be. I played with the same cue almost 30 years. I play just as well with a house cue (just as poorly is perhaps more accurate some nights!). If you want this to be about buying equipment, buy equipment. It's your money and your game so do what you want with it. If you want it to be about playing pool, then play pool.

I think you'll find that this is one of those sports where the equipment has woefully little impact on your playing performance. I'm having a hard time thinking of a sport where the equipment matters less.

I am also going to put the time in practice as well....But just like my daughter when she was playing softball....You have to be able to swing the bat but there is something to be said for the right equipment....If from nothing else but from a confidence standpoint....obviously you have better house cues wherever you play

I would have invested that money in lessons. :)

Part of it comes from the ability to buy these things I wanted as a young man but could not afford...Lessons will come as well

It is your money spend it on what you want.

I have been playing for almost 10 months and I've purchased 8 cues (5 playing, 2 break cues, and. 1 jump cue). It definitely can be addictive. But play with as many cues as you can, so you figure out what you like. The first custom I got I felt like I instantly could play better with it. After talking to a much more experienced player, it seems the balance of the cue just fit me better.

Someone else already said it, but if it comes down to a new cue or lessons, I would chose lessons. Those are invaluable. With what you learn you can basically use with any cue. Hell you might prefer the great walabushka.

I will agree with that....I have been playing 30 years...and I still learn everyday

I kinda did the same thing when I got back playing. Over a period of 2 years I bought a couple dozen cues ranging from 90.00 players all the way to a 2,500.00 custom. A couple of years ago I bought a cheap Chinese made sneaky Pete for for the sole purpose of taking it to Vegas since I did not want to take any of my more expensive cues.

Price may reflect quality of craftsmanship but definitely does not reflect playability. I sold of some but kept about 8. My Dailey player now is the cheap Chinese cure since I play better with it than any of the other cues

spot on....I agree totally

It is very addicting. As a matter-of-fact it is so addicting that Mr. Howerton, and crew, have instituted a new pool players hotline for those of us who can't, or won't, say no.
Called the "We've Got Your Back, Jack" hot line, or the WGYBJ for short, this service was established to assist the mentally weakened pool player, by mentally weakened pool players, in an effort to stop the useless, and wanton, spending of hard earned money for pool related equipment such as cues, cases, gloves, and eastern European chalk.
Although harassed unnecessarily by the billiard equipment industry, the WGYBJ has met with limited success, and hopes are that at least two more lost souls will be saved this year. :thumbup2:

P.S. Please do not confuse the WGYBJ logo with that from the Mandarin Sauna, down the street. There is no second G.

I looked and looked for a cue w design I liked. The v few I found were over $500, closer to 6.
I went w an all black w a little white cue. Plain. I love it. Its not flashy and plays great. Its a reflection of me :)

I got my cue for $230 and a break jump cue for $80 that's all I've used for the last 8 years or so.

I now have a flashy expensive cue I pulled out of hock for a friend. It sits in a case and never gets played. He hasn't and won't have the money to buy it back so its mine. I just like and am used to my cue too much to use it.

It is normal in the beginning. Only time will tell whether or not it becomes habitual with you.

I went through the same thing during my first two years of playing. But last year I realized that the cue/tip/chalk/scuffer/blah-blah-blah don't make any difference. So, yes, I was addicted for two years...then I quit cold turkey.

I do not want to change cues constantly....I just wanted a couple of choices to pick from....I think either cue would play just fine....I am interested in a 314 shaft because I hear good things....Other than that It is now time to dedicate my effort to making improvements in my game.

Iv'e been buying and selling cues for over 70 years, mostly high end, including real Balabushka's.
Recently I asked a good friend and professional Artistic pool player, WHY, and his answer was ( because it's fun ). Most good players see what pro's and other good players are using and would love to try one, but there is no store that stocks them and if there was one it probably would not have your tip of choice or the weight you favor, etc., so we are forced to go buy them on the internet or from other players. Even then, the cue has to be tweaked to your standards. But if you buy quality there is always a good market for resale. So lets keep having fun.

You correctly called it an addiction. All the equipment is unnecessary. But does not mean you shouldn't give in to it. It's just a personal choice. Just like one can be addicted to shoes or watches or cars, you can be addicted to cues. But make sure you aren't deceived by all the marketing, the purchases should be for the right reason. It won't help your game, but it can definitely be a fun thing to collect. A pro at SBE once told me he saw efren run a rack with the butt of a house cue. Don't be tricked by the marketing

I see it as a guy thing....we like shiny new toys....won't make me play better but it sure is pretty to look at

Are you addicted to guns or are you addicted to shooting?

Cues can be addicting but don't forget the wonderful game of pool. For me, pool is about the game, not the equipment, and I MAKE the equipment. It's about how you strike the cue ball with all that fancy wood. Yes, I know there are collectors who hardly play, but myself, I love the game.

cues? One of my favorites: If you have no stroke an expensive cue won't help won't help. If you have a stroke, it doesn't matter.
Still, I seem to play much better with a "good" cue but perhaps I'm just having more fun. Works for me.

Still, who can resist the lure of fancy wood and beautiful cues? Not me.

Addicted to both guns and shooting....love the new toys but also love getting to be a better shot....I was shooting about 1000 rounds a weekend....which got me into reloading 150,000 pistol rounds later....I think I may have enough ammo....the way I see it at least my habits have value
