This Was The Kind Of Day It Was

after running 15 racks yesterday, and really looking forward to getting down to the table today it turned out to be one of those days. balls didnt cooperate, very few decent rolls, break wasnt working today, and my enthusiasm went downhill very quickly.

the layout below was typical of what i am talking about. no chance at running this rack as it is due to the 8-Ball and 3-Ball being stuck together. so, therefore, i struck the cue ball with about a tip of right english, and brought it around two rails in an effort to break up the 8 and 3-Ball.

CueTable Help

well, i hit what i thought was perfect, collided dead on with the 8-Ball, broke them apart, but didnt get any type of decent roll, and ended up with the 2nd diagram below.

CueTable Help

so, maestros, is there anything i could have done differently here? i was pretty proud of myself when i thought i had broken them up - until i saw where they ended up.

come up shorter, the 3-9 is dead.

not an option, the 8-Ball was in such a position where it was blocking the 3-9 combo. sorry ya cant see it that well.

noble idea though, thanks coop!

Steve -

Good idea but you forget that our objective here is to either run out every rack or whine about it when we don't, not play smart game winning 9 ball.

I was going to post the obvious shot, but these posts are getting to a ridiculous point for me.........and If DCP hasn't learned what to do in all these obvious situations by now, he never will......

I think you should be happy you broke them out. Making the shot + a break out shows you have a good idea where whitey is going. Its just a bad roll, nothing more.

What you should have done from here is kick at the 3 two or three rails and tried to play a safe. See how well you can control that shot. Once again a little off and you sell out or miss the ball completely.

Personally I think you should be happy just to have a home table, few do. Enjoy it, I'm positive you do get your share of good rolls. We never hear about them, just the bad ones.

It sounds like you got a good roll with that little sweetie. Play with her instead that should help you unwind. And I don't mean pool.

You can run 15 racks, but a 3-foot straight in draw shot (as you mentioned in another thread) is extremely difficult to you? HMMMMM, WONDER IF SOMEONE MIGHT BE EXAGGERATING.

I don't think DCP is a real person. Until scott lee tells me different I will think he is Fast Larry or some other idiot that has been banned since days gone by.

You'd lose that bet, but for funsies, no harm done.

NEVER said a 3 foot straight in draw shot is difficult. however, a straight in draw shot where the object ball is 3 diamonds out, and the cue ball another 2-3 diamonds away is very difficult.

Making the 1 and getting a solid hit on the 8/3, that's the best anyone could reasonably hope for. You did the best you could do, the roll was just bad luck.

The breakout was the wrong shot. Play the one and then come up table and play stop on the three to leave the opponent frozen to the 8 with the three on the other side.

You could have made the break out the right shot as well, you hit it to weak. Rolling the ball into the backside of the 8 at slow speed is gonna do that. Push the three out more and leave you behind the 8. Setup the same shot and put a little more "umpf" into it next time. Get the balls rolling further, will increase your chance of getting a shot (or at least a straight hit) on the three ball.

There are tons of good options here with this layout after the break, you just chose to ***** and moan about playing one of the few bad ones... shocker...

My thoughts

I myself trying to run that rack would have done just that. Its jst a bad roll that you didn't get shape. I always try to pick a spot on the third rail to it that would cause the balls to seperate. If you could have nick the eight then rail or even hit rail first if it were possible you would have probally continued to run out.IMO

There's an element of luck involved in getting the cue ball to go 3 or 4 rails to successfully open the 8-3 cluster. These long-distance cluster breakouts are more successful if you have an "insurance ball" available after the cluster has been opened.

It probably would have been better to play for a stop shot on the 3, as Icon mentioned.

Reminds me

Someone on this post noted how lucky you are to have a home table.

It has been wonderfull for me but also a curse. I do practice about an hour each day, but with it, after while it does get boring doing drills.

I also play the ghost, and that helps.

One of the ones that I "think" I invented is a game I play while practicing by myself.

The deal is getting from ball to ball. And usually there is a "right" way and we immediately shoot that shot. The game I play is the "wrong" way. For example, if I would normally get positon for the next shot by a follow stroke, I try to get there with a draw or stop shot. If I was going to use right hand, then I can't do that and now can use anyway EXCEPT right hand english.

Try it, it will open your eyes on alot of different ways to "skin that old cat".

Good luck to my friends here at AZ.

if i would have actually been playing someone i would have no doubt chose the Icon idea here. play safe, use the 8-Ball as a blocker, stun the cue dead right behind it.

just thought it was typical that after playing an excellent shot just to contact the 8-3 cluster, i didnt get a roll and ended up snookered behind the 8-Ball.
