this why you complain about apa ?

Lorider, a question or two, how often do you play in apa matches, and will your team be playing at the NTC this year?

another lil tidbit about our team ever making it to the ntc. until we picked up a 6 last session i was the best player on our team the last 2 years so you know we sucked lol.

this session we have the 6 back and also picked up a 7, so for the 1st ever since i have been playing apa we have to worry about the 23 rule.

the 7 i picked up happens to be the napa lo here, i played on his napa team the last 2 sessions. yea we both like to just play pool lol. he is a very good player abd has helped my game along some when he has had time.

up until this session the team has always counted on me to play the higher level opponents, now we have a couple of big guns and it takes the pressure off me somewhat. i really did not mind the pressure , matter of fact i kinda liked it. just hated it when i lost , seemed like i let them down.

i have a lifetime record of 55% in 8 ball and 57% in 9 ball.

tell me about you if you dont mind.

I was rather surprised to see that my lifetime 8-ball winning percentage was 51%. I just went 1-9 last session, and had to be under 50% the two sessions previous, thus the reason for my surprise.

Kind of a flip side for 9-ball, I'm currently 44% lifetime, after a 6-1 finish last session. Funny how this has ebbed and flowed... (Still an SL4 in 9-ball, too. I've only played 3 sessions of 9-ball, so not as big a baseline.)

I havent read any of this thread but if somebody could wrap it in a nutsheel that would be great :boring2:

Entertaining post, thanks. First time I've heard of anybody being sharked by their own scorekeeper.

Keep posting your experiences.

why do i care ?

all i ever see on this forum in any thread that mentions the apa is people complaining about the apa is full of sandbaggers. i want to do my part in ensuring every player is properly handicapped.

do i think my area is full of sandbaggers ? no. do i think there are some people in my area underhandicapped ? yes. i think some are underhandicapped because not too many people bother to mark safties.
i try to educate all my teamates on what to look for in marking safties.

the reason people are underhandicapped is due to incorrect scoring. how can you expect a lo or the home office to accurately handicap a player if you do not have accurate scoresheets ? one of the ways the apa betermines proper skill levels is the number of innings played during a match.

if the scorekeepers are sitting there shooting the bull about what was on tv last night or what there plans are that weekend and just marking down the innings when player b leaves the table and they total up 25 innings for the match. how the hell is the lo going to know that player a made 10 safes in those 25 innings if no one marked them down. he is just going to assume both players banged balls for 25 innings and player a will never be moved to a level reflecting his actual performance .

why do i care so much about a 6 not being raised to a 7 if his actual performance indicates he should be a 7 ? yea you are right it is only 1 more game. 1 more game he has to play which increases my odds of winning the match.

as has been said on this forum many a time. anything can happen in a short race. the longer the race the better the odds for the better player.

I understand your point but if you mark the defensive shots and the opposing team does not that will raise a red flag for the LO. At the end of the day when you do the score sheet you only need to make sure the innings match.

for Lorider, a little about me? (plus)

I started out as a child...
well, as I said I've been doing this for a loooooong time, and have never played in Las Vegas. I think I started in the APA back when it was the Busch League so that may give you some perspective when I say a looooong time. Back then I had actually never picked up a pool cue to play before, now I've got some cues and other equipment, even a table. My LO and I haven't always seen eye to eye but she's one of the best. Your comments about accurate scorekeeping and sandbagging are what caught my attention.. Man, that used to piss me off, no end. But I thought about it, there was really nothing I could do about it. I hated the the other teams laughing at me because I'd try to argue about safes and innings and I was ready to open the rule book and shove it in your face at any opportunity. It had gotten so that pool was just no fun. My efforts to make it better or fair had taken a toll on my reputation and had embarrassed me, my team, and so on. Other teams hated playing me and my team, not because we won all the time, but because were a bunch of bastards. I see teams like that now and I hate to play them too, but it gave me perspective. I try not to offer advice, not everyone wants it. But if I can engage them in conversation I try to give them something to think about. When I thought about it, I had to admit a few things to myself, that I must have looked pretty silly to everyone else, that I couldn't control what anyone else did, opinions varied and didn't always agree with mine, and worst of all - I could be wrong.
I don't know if you've ever played in any national events or anything like that, but gee wiz, in the one or two that I've played in I would swear that every other area in the country sent their sandbaggers just to piss me off. Now, more than anything else I find myself not really caring if someone is trying to sandbag or not. whether they are or not doesn't matter, someone has to play them, maybe they let me win - good for me. Most people can't effectively sandbag anyways, they don't get the system or they don't know it so it all catches up at some point.
So on our team we have a pretty good mix of S/L 3's up to S/L 6's. I think life time I'm at about a 55% win for both 8 and 9 (last time I checked). we play in our cities or regional (or whatever you want to call it) just about every year but have never qualified to play at the NTC. I went to referee once and I have been a few time to watch which I suspect will be the case again this year, but we have a chance so who knows.
So even if it is a pet peeve, just try to let it go. Do your part to keep score accurately but if you try to point out that you think other scorekeepers are not doing it right all that will happen is you will accumulate a bunch of pissed off people that don't want you walking through their door and you'll paint a target on your back. Look at other APA related posts here. When most folks tell their story they start like yours, when they're done the APA sucks, everyone is a sandbagger and the LO is a corrupt SOB that hates them. Now the APA has it's bad element alright, but so does everything else and every other pool league, but I find that if you just play and ignore the other crap you'll enjoy it a whole lot more. The bad element will always be there, but how we react to it or don't react to it is what makes the game enjoyable and allows us to improve and compete on higher levels.

Wow, Wrap, nice post. I was having a rough time for a little bit, because my friends were being real flaky and even when they did show up, there was always somebody I was having to pay dues for. On top of that, I was trying to play up to my own idea of how I should play since I had just turned a 7. It didn't take long(a session or so) before I realized that I wasn't going for the right reasons any more. So, I left my own team to let them get their @#$^ straight(never really happened, they eventually disbanded), joined another team and got back to doing it because I enjoyed it. That's where I've been ever since. I'm more than happy just to show up, give somebody else my few bucks and have fun. If I'm not having fun with a recreational activity that I pay for, I may as well be doing something else.

This is a fantastic post.

i just got in from my money league and read your post wrap, and i got to say i agree with banks and dub, it was a great post.

i thorouly enjoyed reading it and you have some pretty interesting viewpoints on your league experience. plus i think you gave some great advice.

if i had played league in my younger days i probably have been a lot like you were, i was pretty highstrung then. over the years i have mellowed out a lot . yea i will get upset about things sometimes but not to the point i will argue over it. it just aint worth it anymore.

i am really a laid back guy and friendly with every one. i have had several teams ask me to join their team the last 2 years. 2 sessions ago i joined a scoth doubles team . well my gf did not want to sit at home alone on fri nights so she joined another team. well my team was a pretty good team and came in 2nd the 1st session and 1st the 2nd session. we qualified for the cities and i honestly think we were good enough to win the cities this month.

well a couple of weeks ago when this current session started my gf asked me to join a team with her and another couple. i got to be frank here, aint none of them can play pool worth a shit.

i mull it over for a week and say yea i will play. i decided pool is supposed to be a fun night out. i figured we would enjoy it more playing with each other instead of against each other.

when i notified my old team i was going to join my gf team they got so upset they quit scotch doubles. the thing is i play tue night 8 ball with the same players. when i found out they dropped out of scotch doubles i asked do you still want me to play with you on tue night. they said yea. i have played with them the last 2 weeks and they still treat me like always but they will not say why they dropped out of scotch doubles so i just dropped the subject.

i think leaving a real competitive team in order to just have fun with my gf is a step towards not taking this league so seriously. now if i can just quit looking at the scoresheet until the match is over :D

btw my gf plays on my sun night team but we got some real good players on it and i like our chances of winning the cities next year. we got 2 new guys that are not qualified to play in the cities this month and they both are oustanding players.

i missed your post earlier.thanks for the compliment. you made me laugh. i guess being sharked by the scorekeeper is one way of looking at it. come to think of it , it is pretty hilarious.

as far as keep posting my experiences, i would love to if i think they are interesting enough. the poster above you thinks this is a pretty boring thread.

wow!!

I guess there are some LOs somewhere who are not corrupt. Maybe it's just my area, but the APA here has left a horrible taste in my mouth. I agree with what wrap said and for that reason I choose not to participate in the APA. Occasionally I will accompany friends to their APA matches. It seems nothing has changed (here) in the several years since I quit APA. Still the same LO as well. Not a coincidence, I'm sure...
