Thorsten Hohmann blog

OOF! this discussion AGAIN! :D

ok IMO, EVERY pool event played with a cash prize is gambling. You put up your small entry fee, and try to win the BIG money! So, unless I see it wrong? being a "Pro" player = being a gambler. I hate it when players say "we need to get gambling out of the game" BS, Pro Tourneys are gambling in nice places, with nice clothes and an announcer! If you don't like the gambling aspect of pool, then play for FREE!....or give your winnings to charity!....oh no wait, I'm a PRO, so I get to keep it, but I'm not a gambler....paaafrigginleeez!

On the Mosconi issue of him hating gamblers....read his bio, as a kid he gambled pool to help bring $$$ home. Why he ragged on gamblers later on is anyone's guess, but kinda hypocritical IMHO. Along the same line as that are the folks that hate gambling in pool yet vacation in Vegas, or Atlantic City pumping up the slots, or playing Bingo for prizes at CHURCH!, or the Lotto and scratch off cards, or the 50/50 at their kids football game etc......you know?!

Maybe what people don't like is the image portrayed by the "typical" pool hustler of being in dirty smokey pool rooms with drugs or whatever, but you know what? I've played pool my whole life and never once spent any time in a place like that. The rooms I play in are fun with nice people and clean equipment. Sure theres action if you want it, but it's not some scary place to be.

How do we bring pool back into the lime light? I have no friggin idea, but IMO TAR is doing the right thing by letting as many people that know about it watch high quality pool action from the comfort of their couch, and that works for me.

I'm gettin off this soap box and smashing it to pieces!:D

The word "pool" means a collective bet. Gambling is embedded in our game and has been since the game moved indoors and probably before that. The game has taken on a seedy image for many reasons and gambling is only one piece.

Gerry...

I have read his bio and several others and the true story seems to be that not only did he dislike gamblers...but also gambling...AND ALSO PLAYING POOL ITSELF!

He tried several times to abandon the game altogether but was FORCED to continue on when he became his family's main source of financial support.

Gambling for lack of choice while openly disliking doing so is not hypocritical. What would have been hypocritical is for him to ADVOCATE gambling when disliking it in reality. He didn't do that.

If you have not already read it, I strongly recommend The Hustler and the Champ by R.A. Dyer. It is a great read and extremely authoritative on the lives and interactions of Willie and Fats.

Jim

Thorsten Hohmann just updated his blog. this time it is about the Derby city Classic

So, what do YOU think?

Thorsten Hohman was a MONSTER in 2003 and it looked like he would become a dominant player. I love his stroke and mechanics and really hope he can regain his tip top form.
My question is, with guys like VanBoening, Alcano and the new Filipinos like Gomez & company, does he have a realistic chance of ever winning the World 9 Ball title again? I know you can never say never, but how realistic chance does he have now?

Well, he won the European 9-ball Championships 9 months ago...

And in the semifinal of the World 9-ball Championships 2007, 3 of 4 players were Europeans...

Its not gambling. Its a 2-person tournament with a cash first-place prize.

Powerball is gambling. Slots is gambling. A tournament is a contest of skill.

Exagdamundo!

What makes a tournament so much better? If you really want to pay taxes or something, have a beer while/after shooting. ;)
