Thoughts on Calcutta/Tournament Issue

There was a post from one of the best pool room owners and promoters in the US about a top 1 hole player (Hall)
who went for a good amount of money in the calcutta (I believe they said 65+).

The promoter put this player up in a hotel for a few nights at his own expense and someone bought the player in the calcutta.
Apparently, the player spent 2 nights on a bar stool drunk.

A post mentioned that this player was not allowed to participate in any calcutta, and only had to play for tournament money.

I posted that maybe this player should take say 10% or so of his action money and pay back the calcutta person and also the owner for his kindness.

What do you guys think.?

In regards to JHall specifically, buyer beware. You just never know which cat is going to show up. Those guys who bought him in the calcuttas knew that. This might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back, though.

Thanks Benny. IMHO 65 is a good bit of money. Not sure how much it is to the guy who bought him.

I think it was only in the 9 ball calcutta where there was a problem. He went for 1200 in that one. As far as i know he played in the one pocket tourny just fine although he did have a tough draw.

We like Justin Hall over here at Buffalo's but goddammit if you aren't going to take it serious enough to get some sleep....and subsequently wake up in time for your matches ...then something needs to be done...

At the very least---any tournament he participates in ...he should be confined to tournament money only....Auctioning him off in the players calcutta is financial suicide....So he went for $6500 in the One Pocket Calcutta ....and $1200....in the 9 ball calcutta.( where he lost to Mike Holme ( an APA 4 )...and then didn't bother to show up at all for today's match.....If I had paid $1200 for him....and he didn't show...I would have been one pissed off mother fucker....So WB John paid $6500 for him in the One Pocket and Kevin LaFrance blow the $1200 in the 9 ball calcutta....

And if you think I didn't lose ( your wrong )......I paid for his hotel room ...try and help him out ....he wouldn't have no e×cuses....no need to stay out ....$199 a night ....and what does this motherfucker do.....slept on the bar stool all night.....My nuts was swelled up like watermelons ......$199 a night and he's sleeping like a baby on the stool for almost 2 days.........So my solution is easy......until you can demonstrate some adult responsibility ....NO SOUP FOR YOU....NO CALCUTTA FOR YOU J HALL.....

Well if you take something from someone that is helping you out, the person deserves more than a thank you when you have money to say thank you back.

My rule in business was if someone helped me, fed me info to help with something, or open door say for more opportunity.

Had to do something to say thank you.

People remember the good, and bad people based upon peoples actions.

Your= belongs to or refer to 'you'
You're= you are.

Thank me later.

So I’m not reading anything bad about the one pocket. 9 ball he lost to a four and didn’t show up. Which nights he slept on barstools isn’t clear. If he did that during the one pocket then I see your point.

You buy someone in a Calcutta at your own risk. You don’t own them and there is certainly no guarantee they will want or can afford to buy $ back half of themselves from you. They are not obligated to play their hardest for you, they could concede games or a match at any time if they so desire, they may show up for a match in less than ideal playing condition or could even fail to show up for a match at all.

That’s why you had better do your homework on a player before bidding on and buying any player in a Calcutta. You may think you are getting a great $ buy on a player, but a track record of past issues such as these mentioned could be one reason why smart bidders may choose to stay away from bidding on certain players.

Professional Pool Players are different breed of Animals. Most are nothing like Willie Mosconi, who was great at playing & ambassador of game.

I've known JHall for a long time, the mostly clean J and the troubled J and everybody knows that he isn't in control of his habit. He's a good player with an issue that he is not in control of, not an excuse because he doesn't need one, everybody can see where he is and has been for a long time.

I hope he finds a way to get and stay clean before its to late.

Kinda. Looks like he lost 5-0 to Corey then 5-0 to Sky. Sure that’s a tough draw but if you’re going to go down the 1P specialist road then you ought to be able to get one game off those guys. Otherwise things aren’t looking so hot for him.

This is really disappointing to read. I like Justin and never had a problem with him. I do know he had a gambling Jones for the casinos but so do many others. I hope for his sake someone can convince him to get enrolled in AA. That is about the only way I've seen anyone kick the drinking habit. You need lots of support!

I agree. Didn't know what his one pocket scores were. He certainly plays too good to get shut out in both matches.
Actually after checking he lost on the hill against Corey.

I fully understand all the reasons why Calcutta was introduced into pool tournaments; but personally always preferred the smaller gambling option where each player could pay their way into a side pot at a set dollar amount that was 100% distributed to the first few places in a tournament.

The auction style Calcutta satisfies the whole big money gambling side of the game that straight tournament entry fees and player side pot buy- ins do not satisfy- for those in and out of the tournament who need or want "action" beyond what actually occurs on the tables.

Pool certainly has a history when it comes to the bigger money gambling side of things and this post reveals that nothing has changed and probably never will.

Well let’s say as far as I know under Arizona Revised Statutes Calvutta are not allowed. Don’t understand the why, how are what Calcutta is. Someone please share if you know.

Side bets are allowed by tournament’s , they pay part of pot to people who bought in. Finish in pay out pool.

Please do not say every gambles, as if your caught parties involved, are busted, bar owner is putting alcohol license on like. If they loose kiss 200+ good buy.

We we are allowed Tournaments, and side pots is social gambling statutes.
