Thoughts on Pool Sponsors

In the past, we have seen sponsors for the sport of pool come from alcohol, smoking, and pool equipment manufacturers - with all of the varied businesses out there, what do you think would be a great product/sponsor for the sport?

well for the men...MAybe english leather cologne or maybe grecian hair for men. Something along those line would aslo help with getting the sport cleaned up a little. what man wants to go around smelling nice and looking sloppy. you could also so some liquor sponsorship with a player. There are alot of these ides out there but nobody utilizes them.......mike

I was curious about this myself because I know that there are struggling pool tours out there that with a little guidance, might have a future - would love to see pool flourish - with all of the brainiacs on this forum, thought it would be a good question to throw out there.

With the IPT ready to start it will be interesting to see which companies get in on the ground floor first. Look at the PGA tour everybody wants to be associated with a winner.

English Leather? Didn't they used to sponsor the Challenge of Champions back in the day? I don't know anyone who uses English Leather. The other day I saw a series of commercials for an anti-persperiant featuring Danica Patrick, and I thought a sponser like Degree or Speed Stick would fit in perfect with a high pressure sport like pool.

Any fast food chain.

There were quite a few commercials on OLN when they showed the IPT.

How about a health food store?

Bowflex?

Golf products since all pool players would rather be playing golf anyway.

Cars

I had a sponsor when I was playing the Florida Tour in the 90's. I signed a yearly contract with the head of a local car dealership. He gave me money and golf shirts with his logo on the front and my name on the sleeve.

My responsibilities were to wear the shirt when competing and practicing...and to talk about the dealership to anyone who asked about the shirt etc...

I had the sponsor's business card to which I wrote my name on and which I gave to anyone interested in visiting him to see about the discount he promised to anyone bringing in a card with my name on it. My card gave a potential customer access to the owner of the business and great service with a price break.

So basically in return for cash sponsorship I gave exposure for the dealership logo and I sent some business to the dealership. We were both satisfied. The arrangement lasted four years until I moved out of the county and the tour died down.

And on a larger scale it makes sense to me that touring pros...and tournament promoters...should look to the main office of the automakers for sponsorship.

And imo local players can take my example of simply knocking on doors and asking for sponsorship. And make sure they have a reason for choosing YOU.

I think a watch company such as Timex would be a perfect sponsor for pool. If players wore a watch on their bridge had, that watch would be in frequent view in a televised match, so the sponsor would get their money's worth.

More generally, I think mid-price-range jewelry manufacturers might find pool to be a possible means of marketing their product.
