The 8 BALL IN's weekend 8 ball tournament in Great Falls, MT has started with the Calcutta this evening. Weather is rain with snow in the mountain passes. They added $5,000 to the prize money. Pool isn't dead here, ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY PLAYERS (180) showed up to play:D :D Had to turn 20 players away since "there isn't room at the In" The last big tournament at the 8 BALL IN had Max Eberle, Tyler Edey, and Edwin Mondel playing --- don't know if they are there this time.

calcutta?

Okay--I'm obviously a guy who never gambles or plays in tournaments. I play in my basement with my wife and the neighbors.

That being said--what's a Calcutta? I see the phrase all the time.

the players are auctioned off to the highest bidder. there is a seperate prize fund that is generated from the calcutta. the player, if he didnt buy himself in the calcutta, can buy half of himself from the person that bought him in the calcutta. it generates action.

calcuttas are good for the game

not wanting to hijack the thread but; support the players. spend some calcutta money. makes them feel good to know somebody is willing to put/invest money on them and their chances. good for the tournament sponsors as well.
