I'm not sure what this means but I wasn't disagreeing with you.
Sry I thought you were confusing a per game limit with a match time limit.
.....perhaps I should be the one reading.

Give each player a set amount of time per rack with no extensions. With the current shot clock system...if you are allowed 20 seconds per shot, but shoot in 5 seconds, the clock resets and you lose the left over time. With a time limit per game you would essentially be banking this left over time. This would promote faster play because it rewards you for it, but more importantly, it penalizes the slow player who does the same time consuming routine for every shot since now he is actually consuming his own time.
IMHO 20sec with one extension works fine. I've never seen one with extra 10sec. extensions.
First of all someone would have to buy the punch clocks and put them at each table. Someone would have to watch too, what it a player decides he doesn't want to punch his clock in an inning? What if there were an inordinate number of innings in a game because of saftey play?
We would never even make it past the first step anyway, nobody cares enough to buy a bunch of clocks for a tournament. I think we should focus on fixing things that could possibly help the future of pool. Forming a players union where the best players in the world have some collective leverage would be a start.
Silly notion.......there was an old TV show ....."Beat The Clock"......it sucked.
Simply establish a time clock right over the table and if players do not complete
their shot within the time period, they get penalized and lose their turn. The other
player can either accept the table or give it back.
Regardless, a player that incurs two time clock penalties in a match will result in
a ball in hand gift for the other player to take advantage of. Strict enforcement of
time adherence will improve the game and should be adopted even in leagues.
OMG am I'm going to have to do a demonstration to get this through to you guys? This is NO DIFFERENT than the currently accepted shot clock system EXCEPT that all of the 20 second increments of time that are now allowed per shot are all grouped together as ONE BIG SHOT CLOCK that starts and stops. With the current method, a faster player essentially "loses" 15 seconds of the shot clock by shooting in 5 seconds because the clock resets to 20 seconds for his next shot...why don't they tack on the remaining 15 seconds onto his next shot then? Like they do if he called an extension? With ONE BIG SHOT CLOCK he would still have that 15 seconds available.
s. With the current method, a faster player essentially "loses" 15 seconds of the shot clock by shooting in 5 seconds because the clock resets to 20 seconds for his next shot...why don't they tack on the remaining 15 seconds onto his next shot then giving him 35 seconds? Afterall, that's what they do if he calls an extension? With ONE BIG SHOT CLOCK he would still have that 15 seconds available.
Except that there's an overall limit for the length of the game, right? Isn't there a danger that it turns into a circus at the end when people are running out of time and they're trying to shoot fast? And some games take a lot longer than others through no fault of the players - some games are run-outs and some have safety battles. With per-shot shot clocks, there's no penalty for those longer games like there is with per-game clocks.
I know Bob Jewett has advocated this method, but I don't really get it, except the convenience that chess clocks are widely available whereas the per-shot type clocks are not.
I personally like the idea of x amount of time (e.g. 30 sec.) per shot, with one 30 sec. extension. Get an app and put it on the phone, and you've got to press the button before time's up. If it beeps it's a foul.
who is gonna buy, and use, all those new stop watches?
Hmm this is what you said in your first post: "Give each player a set amount of time per rack with no extensions." So each player would have 5 minutes (or whatever) to shoot all their shots in the game, right?omg.
With the current shot clock method:
- You get 20 seconds per shot.
- If you take 10 seconds to shoot you get 20 seconds on the next shot.
- What happened to that 10 seconds you didn't use? It's gone.
With this new method the player does not lose that 10 seconds. That is the only difference. That 10 seconds instead of evaporating into nether nether land gets added to the next shot...the EXACT same way they do when you call an extension with the current system.
That's it.
Debating this is fruitless.......you never lose any time.
The time gets compressed into a quicker pace of play.
Matches take "less time" but time never is truly lost.
Sounds like OP just discovered Rapid Transit Chess
& has become enamored with concept of a falling flag
like on tournament chess clocks. It's just blatantly dumb.

But now you're saying that there isn't that overall time limit for the game, you're just banking time for the very next shot and only the very next shot? It's like rollover minutes for your cellphone plan? OK, but that's different from what you were saying before, unless I misunderstood what you said before.
Amazing that a brand new member expresses condescension towards people he doesn't know and
expects that his aberrant minded notions would be recognized and accepted as "pearls of wisdom."
Let's start a pool........how long will this person last around these parts? He seems to have a chip on
his shoulders when he's told his remarks don't make sense. He might be a great guy but it sure looks
like he never learned what humility is all about. If he maintains this posture, his departure is welcomed.
