Tiny lady beginner, shorter cue?

I'd like to give a cue to a family member who is just starting to play. She's a grandmother, just over 5' tall. It seems to me she would be more comfortable with a shorter cue, say 52". She lives in a different part of the country, so I can't see for myself.

Recommendations? Experience matching cue length to height?

Thanks!

Barker, I totally agree with you, a shorter cue is the way to go for the following reasons. First, let me say that I work with a number children who are interested in pool. I have found that people who are between 4.8ft and and about 5.4ft have much easier time learning to play pool with a cue that fits their height.

There are number of manufactures that produce shorter today.
They are mostly sold on the market as children's cues and they will come in lengths from about 42" to 52". I would suggest you buy a 52" cue for your Grandmother, it will allow her to learn to stroke the ball without over extending and being off balance for to much length.

These cues cost in the neighborhood of $35 to $60 depend upon the quality of the product..

Hope this helps!!!!!!

My personal opinion is to give her a standard length cue. Just over 5' tall is not that short. The cue you will be giving her ( I assume) will not be a multi thousand dollar collectable, so I think that in the interest of her ability to easily find future cues and pick and choose amongst them. Standard is fine. Lots of folks that height use standard cues. Perhaps weight is more important. Id suggest 18.5 to 19.0 oz.

My three daughters are all around 5' 1" or 2". There in their thirties now and started with a standard cue when they were about 8. All three still use a standard and one of them is pretty darn good on a bar table...she doesn't pay for her drinks and is always buying something like a nice pair of boots each week from her winings. Standard length cue. But because there are many ways to alter the cue, balance and weight being two, comfort shouldn't be an issue. I can only see length as a issue if the room itself is small.

One thing to remember is that truncating a cue drastically alters it's native balance. The weight of a cue distributed over 58" is dramatically different than being distributed over 54", the balance is very affected. Try balancing a 5' dowel horizontally on your index finger, then try doing the same with a 3' dowel. The weight of the 3' dowel is not portioned as well as the 5'.

Go with a standard cue. My wife, Ortelia is only 4'10" and plays pretty good with one (ask some of the people who attended the Jimbo-Jambo or the GWN get togethers). She does tend to choke down on the handle a bit so a more forward weighted cue may be a better choice.
