whats the best way to burnish a tip without a lathe? after i put one on and get it flush with the ferrul i just squeeze paper around it to make it kinda shiny. any better ways for the do-it-yourselfer?
thanks,
jay

Here is the oldest and most original and it doesn't cost a dime. After you finish of the edges with some fine paper, use a little spit and your jeans, just bend your leg to tighten the jeans a little and away you go. If you need something else, Tiger Products are great and very nice people to do business with.

I can bottle some of my special burninshing spit and sell it to you for half price. It works great, I can get however much you want too. I use a chunk of leather, when i do tips. I little spit goes a long way.

French polish, napkin then old thick cowhide while the shaft is spinning works for me.

I think we missed the point that he does not have a lathe and is doing it by hand. A little spit, some friction to generate some heat. clean paper works, leather, whatever as long as its relatively clean.

Take a piece of leather and wrap it around the cue tip with your thumb and pointer finger. Kinda like your pinching something. Before you do this just wet the tip with spit a little. clamp the leather around the egde of the tip and place the but if the cue is together or the collered part of the shaft agianst your thigh and push or roll the shaft with your free hand back and forth really fast. Thats all there is to it.

thanks guys. i bought a box of tips to make a little extra money at the hall. i put 2 on yesterday and used the method nbll01 said. works nicely. turned out looking just as good as the tip i got put on from someone using a lathe...thanks,
Jay

It's cool here now but it's supposed to get hot this weekend.

After putting on a new tip, does the crystal coat help or keep the tip from mushrooming?

BTW If you don't have paper, I like to use a dollar bill too. (The other paper) :D

The original french polish, if I am remembering correctly, was numberous coats of shellac that was rubbed down between each coat. Is Mr Cali's product shellac?

"HUT Crystal Coat liquid friction finish is the result of several years of research. Just a drop of this magical mixture of rich, warm shellac and water-resistant Carnauba wax produces a glass-like finish in seconds! Finishing on the lathe has never been this easy! For carvings, toys, and flat surfaces, hand rub or buff to a beautiful, non-toxic luster."
