I am about to install a new tip its the layered style 14. I have just about everything I need to install it but does it have to be the glue that you get from pool suppliers or can you use other high strength glues? not talking super glues or any one particular brand over the other. I am aware that I need to wait about 2 - 4 hours after install to trim or use the cue.

Tip Glue

It doesn't have to be "cue specific" glue. Most use the Loctite Gel Superglue that can be found at most hardware store.

thank you for the info I was having a hard time searching for this. nothing about actual cue tips came up it was all tips on how to play.

I also use Loctite Gel, after 1-2 hours I trim the tip and shaped it. Next day I'm ready to play with my cue.

I've been putting my own single layered tip on for years w/o a problem. I put a few of the layered tips on over the years w/o a lathe and it was no fun. Next time I get crazy enough to want a layered tip on I'll bring it to a pro. Good luck with yours. Johnnyt

I'm just making sure on the cure times I want to install it tomorrow and be able to use it in the evening. to see how well the medium tip does and how smooth it should hit and react to the balls. I might go to a soft tip later if I don't like this one. and also how hard is it to change a farrel out?

that would be ideal to bring it to a pro but I can't find anyone around here that does it

Tiger glue or zap-a-gap for me. Do you have an old cue you can practice on before you work on your good cue

Where is 'here'? Believe it or not, we have lots of people from lots of different 'heres' here.

Don't even think about trying to change a ferrule unless you hate your shaft and want to buy a new one.

dld

here is Gulfport MS I'm going to have to learn how to do everything

and no I'll have to use a house cue. the farrel is for the jump break cue I want an icebreaker on it. but the farrel and tip on it are one piece. the tip for my playing cue needs replacing though and plus. I hate the hardness

How are you going to buff the scratches ?

IMO very few people can change a tip by hand and come close to doing it right.

It seems like this subject keeps comming up over and over and over.

Best advise take it to a cue repair man.

Average problems when someone does a tip by hand,

The tip, ferrule and shaft has been sanded more one one side then the orther.

If you touch your ferrule with sand paper you are screwing up.

I ended up replacing the ferrule, because if I would of tried to clean this ferrule up
the outside dia would of made the ferrule much smaller because the op sanded everthing off center and out of round.

Doing your own tip by hand is not for everyone.
Plus look how thin the ferrule is ,very little left to work with.

Speaking of bringing your layered tip to a pro for attachment:

How much does your local cue repair guy charge at your pool room to glue your layered tip on? NO FINISHING OR CLEANING OF SHAFT. Just glue, trim and shape tip. How MUCH do you pay?
Thanks to all who report.

Also,
I am not talking about having your tip put on while at a pool tournament. I know tip installers have additional expenses to cover at pool tournaments.
