Tip Question

I have posted this same thread under 'Machinery and Supplies' so if you may come across this twice. If you haven't came across this yet, any advice given would be appreciated.

My personal preference for tips is sort of tough because I prefer a firm hit (like a medium to hard), but I absolutely cannot stand the hard ting/ding sound that comes with the harder tips. I have been using several different tips. I use to use a soft kamui which I found to hit quite well the first 2 months. After those two months, as you can imagine the layers wore down and it started hitting much harder than I'd like. I have recently been playing with a Lepro. I really like that the tip has a firm hit, but does not make much noise at all. The only thing I don't care for with the Lepro is that you really have a hard time finding a decent one out of a box. This is just two examples of my preferences to tips. I was wondering if anyone had the same preferences as I did and what did you end up using? Any suggestions or comments would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I agree that the quality control of the Lepros are pretty awful.

Have you tried Morakami tips? I usually use a Kamui Black soft, but the tip installer didn't have that particular one, and recommended the Morakami soft. He said it played like the old Moori mediums.

That's what's on my cue now and he was right. It hits slightly harder than the Kamui Black soft but not overly hard. It did mushroom very slightly, but not enough to concern me. You might like it or maybe try the the medium.

Since G2 came into the market for me it s by far the best product.
The G2 Medium as well as the hard one are top-notch products. Unbelievable consistant-
Imo a much better quality standard- very repeatable quality- and not hardening up that much, too.

And: A GOOD SOUND :p (subjective- b ut important to me, too :) )

Your post struck me as a bit odd. I have a G2 soft on an 11.75 mm European/conical taper OB Pro shaft.

I have a Kamui Black Medium on another OB Pro shaft & a Kamui Black SS on a 12.75 mm OB Classic Shaft.

I like the G2 except for one thing, the sound. The soft tip had a very hard sound that to me can be deceptive as it is influencing me for the feedback for speed. The hard sound went away & I was more pleased with it. Then... it came back again.

I'm not sure what it is. Is it the glue between the players or is it weather related? It does not not appear to hit noticeably differently for different weather as the feel is still soft... but that hard sound for a soft tip is a concern to me & especially because it is not consistent.

For me, for a soft tip, the Kamui is the best & most like an Elk Master but much better for durability. I guess it should be as it costs about 900% more than an Elk Master, but... there is an advantage to having the same tip on for a much longer period of time.

Anyway, I like the G2 except for the sound.

Well,

the clue can make a difference for sure-
I just a very oldschooled glue-- takes much more time- but the connection between wood and the leather is very homogeneous (hope that s the right vocabulary).

I play the G2 Hard since 2 years now- and will stay with hit.
But hey- sound is for sure subjective :)

I like the hard and dry sound - without hearing this "PIING" :-)
the grip of the tip is superb-

Just to be clear, I was talking about the 'glue' between the layers of the tip & not the glue to glue the tip to the stick.

Kitsch. They're brilliant tips and I've found the sound to be pretty consistent and more of a dull thud than a clicky sound in the hards.

A friend of mine soaks elks in super glue gell that's been watered down.... Dunno what ratio he uses for a few minutes and he swears by them. His cue makes almost no sound but plays like a very hard tip would.

Up until a few years ago I, exclusively, used Le Pro tips and thought they were the best tips for ME and my style of playing. I always bought them by the box and hand picked the best ones and put them on my cue by hand.

The quality control of them suck now and I've started experimenting with some others. Every type of tips will play differently on different shaft and ferrules. If you play with different cues from time to time, the same feel and hit may not be the same just because you are using the same tip.

For example, I play with a Black Kamui SS on my Predator Fat 314-2 shaft on my Titlist butt. I don't get the same "feel" with the same butt and my Pancerny shaft made for the same cue with that tip. When I put a TNT Max Pro tip on the Pancerny shaft, the vibrations, sound, and feel are close to the Predator shaft. To me, feel, sound and touch are a big part of the game...even if it is only in one's mind.

As with other players I have tried more tips than I can count, or remember. looking for the elusive perfect tip for me.

I have settled in on Ultraskins Medium. I get the feel sound and action I need with those.

Besides the price is great for a layered tip.

p.s. as I respect Ingo's opinion highly, I may give a G2 a whirl.
