Hello All,

I am some what of a new poster on the forum and my question to any and all pool players what tip do you prefer to use of your cue.

Next question, Right now I seem to be stuck in purgatory with the tips that I have chosen, I have used Moori Mediums in the past but alas they have since gone out of business and I cannot find any of the tips where I live any longer. Hence I decided to give Kamui Black's a try. Well needless to stay I can not stand that empty hit sound you get every time you hit the ball. Worse part I just cannot get comfortable with the tip, there goes 40.00 dollars down the drain, any suggestions, I prefer a medium tip and something that grips the ball.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. :eek:

Renfro on AZ has the best tips I've ever played with
I've played with just about everything. They are very reasonable and perfect
In my opinion it's what a medium should be.
 
get a hold of pooldawg8 here on the forums. he makes the best milk duds on the planet!! OR if you are dead set on a layered tip get a hold of Tom Hay (username TomHay ) and try his ultraskins. If you like a medium tip, I would try both the medium and the soft. They are the least expensive quality layered tip you will find.

Here's my 2 cents. Don't pay 20 bucks for a tip when you can buy a perfectly good one for only a few bucks. Try one of these tips You can probably get them even cheaper on Ebay. Excellent tips!

I was a die hard Triangle user until I tried one of these. Highly recommend this one.
 
Petey already tossed my name in the ring so I will say a few things... I'll put one of the medium Ki-Techs up against any tip on the market as far as playability, performance and durability.... Since the Ki-Techs are done in small batches they are the closest thing to a hand made tip on the market... Many of the tips you see are simply tips made in Taiwan by 1 of a cpl of manufacturers and labeled for sellers here in the states..

Every tip we do is touched multiple times during the processing and checked for quality control. The final pressing is still done by hand and each tip is tested and sorted at that point. Currently any tip that does not fall into a 2 point durometer window or within a few thousandths in thickness is tossed into the discard pile and recycled or reprocessed depending on it's fault...

Each of our grades is an entirely different tip... We don't just have a single tip pressed at different PSIs and send them out as soft medium or hard.. The leather, chemicals and processing used varies to create a soft, medium or hard that will stand up to the rigors of play while maintaining the characteristics that it had when you first put it on....

The tips are still new to the market (3+ years in development but only being sold for the last year) and are only sold on the Outsville website and here on AZ... I currently don't think I want to pursue the major retail houses as I don't want the Ki-Techs just to be "another" tip...

We are developing a very strong following locally and here on AZ and every week we have more phone calls and emails coming in from people who have tried them and gotten our contact information by word of mouth...

Doing small batches I have the capability to actually tailor a tip to a player and may offer that going forward... I can adjust the grip, elasticity and hardness based on preferences and at some point may roll out the Outsville Match-Grade service for players who know exactly what they want in a tip and charge for the fitting service and store the formulas for future orders...

I started working on tips simply because I was tired of trying every tip on the market searching for a tip that performed to my liking and continued to do so over the course of more than a month... Every layered tip I have tried came out of the gate well as far as playability only to falter and change characteristics a month down the road as it hardened up... Granted the hard versions of those tips may not significantly alter but not every one wants to play with a hard tip grade....

Try to contact CUEJO here on AZ, He is a cue builder and repair man from Canada.
Supper cool guy, I'm sure he can get you what ever you want even Moori Med, and if for some reason he can not I have a few Moori MED I will sell you for a very fair price. IF interested PM me.
 
First and foremost, preference in tips is purely subjective. What I like you may hate. In your original post, you say you don't care for Kamuis, but I can guarantee you there are hundreds of Kamui lovers here on AZ that will gladly argue with you on how great Kamuis play. So, to each their own. I highly recommend you try a bunch of different tips. You will eventually find one that's perfect for you. True, you might waste a little cash along the way, but that's life.

Secondly, the "Moori is going out of business" story has been going around for years. Believe it if you want, but it just is not true. With a couple clicks of a mouse button I can order as many as I want. For those that don't like Mooris, don't play with them. Why spread a BS rumor?

I have only been playing with Renfro's K-tech tips for about a week. I could not be happier.
 
I think any smaller company trying hard to make a good tip is going to give a high quality product. I am sure Renfro's Ki-techs are great tips, although I have never used them (yet). I also suggest trying Tom Hay's Ultraskin tips, as I have used them and think they are amazing tips. They benefit from the high quality standards that small batch tips enjoy.

If for some reason you are looking for a tip from a larger company, I am also a fan of the Tiger Onyx tip. Although honestly, after trying Tom's tips, it just seems silly to pay the extra money for the Tiger tip.
 
I feel for the OP. Like others, I have been dealing with the need to replace Moori Medium and Quick tips that I really liked. The difficulty in finding tips with similar characteristics is compounded by the lack of consistent means for categorizing hardness. From my perspective, cost (tip + installation) is not the only concern. Finding an installer who doesn’t sand the ferrule a bit each time is more challenging than I would have expected. Feel is subjective, so recommendations cannot provide real assurance. There are quite a few fine tips that are being sold. Each has its own characteristics and each has an appreciative group of users. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any easy answers for finding a tip that feels and plays like an old Moori. I concluded that we need to find different tips that we can also appreciate even if they don’t feel the same.

Like Chris (The Renfro), I was also influenced by the statement on the Atlas website about currently available Moori tips. Lacking a clear means for identifying authentic Moori tips, I have steered clear. I have tried many but not all of the currently popular brands. My experience with Kamui Black Medium is quite a bit better than the OP’s. It doesn’t feel like a Moori, but it has been a very good (albeit rather hard) tip in my experience. Like the OP, after spending $45 on a Kamui Black Hard only to find it was not to my liking, it was difficult to go back to the same brand (glad I did). Adding another brand into possible consideration for the OP, my current favorite is G2 Hard. I have only used one for a couple of weeks. It doesn’t feel like any other tip I have used. While it is listed as a hard tip and durometer measurements appear to support the categorization, it doesn’t feel like a hard tip to me. Time will tell how I like the tip as it matures. But it is the first tip that tempts me to replace the tips on my other shafts.

Re; Tip Questions

Hey All

Sorry I took a little bit longer to respond, I appreciate all the suggestions on tips, I had pool league last night and ended up trying a few different tips that my teammates use. I am still trying to find the perfect fit for my game, I have got narrowed down to 2.

Thanks again for your help. I will post back in a few days to let you know which one I decided on. I know one thing for sure I will not be going back to Kamui anytime soon, that's just me. :)
