I just retired recently and got back into pool after having been away for a number of years, (didn't quit playing, just dropped out of leagues which I was heavy into). There are so many new tip options I'd like to get some comparisons on the ones below.
Kamui soft/med/hard
Kamui black, ditto
Kamui clear black, ditto
Moori soft/med/hard
Predator Victory
I shoot with a Schon SL-7 with a pre-cat 314 Predator with whatever tip they put on that shaft from the factory and like it a lot. Any idea what tip Predator may have used on the pre-cat shafts?
I see when ordering a new LD many times you can spec an optional tip so I'm trying to educate myself on the various tips out there. In general I'd say I prefer a medium tip that would lend confidence and consistency to draw shots. Any thoughts on tips in general would be appreciated.
Thanks,
I've tried most of these extensively, and install tips so I also get a lot of feedback from others. Here is what I think:
Kamui: If you have a competent installer, the clear plays exactly the same as the non clear. The bown and black are very different. Brown is less flexible and more to my liking at softer hardnesses. The brown grips the ball great, and has a more "direct" feel...you don't feel the tip flex when using english. The black, at soft and super soft, flexes quite a bit when tall or on a smaller diameter shaft. You feel the tip "load up" and then "spring back", which can create a ton of english, but it is very progressive...in that sometimes a little more input creates a LOT more output. The brown plays more linear. My favorite Kamui tip is the brown medium. Next would be the black medium (which is WAY less flexible than the soft.) The black medium is to me closer to a hard tip than a medium. Very nice tip though.
Moori: I haven't tried a moori in a long time. 10-15 years ago I loved the medium and medium hard before that. However I honestly can't comment on their newer stuff.
Predator Victory: this tip seems to be about 2 years old. Initially , I very much disliked it. It felt dull and lifeless to me. When I tried out the 3 series Predator shafts, I was ready to write them off as not that good until I tried them with different tips. When I got my own 314-3, I shot around with the Victory tip for a couple of days and actually came to like it better. Still, I think Kamui or other options are much nicer.
Other options: I think G2 might be the best tip out there now. If you like the old Moori's, I think the G2 comes the closest, but even advances that idea to the next level. I like the medium myself, but the hard is quite a nice tip as well. Haven't tried the soft myself. The quality is top notch. Very very nice tip. I play mainly with Predator 314-2, but I have some original 314's as well. I think the G2 medium would be a match made in heaven for your Pre Cat.
Also great tips out these days: Cyborg (I tried the medium and LOVED it), Tiger Emerald (big surprise here...this tip feels "invisible"...doesn't call attention to itself when you hit the ball, but plays *great*...good grip, holds its shape, nice hit, and CHEAP!)
FYI, somewhere in the middle of the 314-2 safts from Predator is when they switched to the Tiger Everest tip as standard equipment. Predator shafts before that came with a LePro. The new 3 series have the Victory tips.
Hope this helps!
