Tip questions

I just retired recently and got back into pool after having been away for a number of years, (didn't quit playing, just dropped out of leagues which I was heavy into). There are so many new tip options I'd like to get some comparisons on the ones below.

Kamui soft/med/hard
Kamui black, ditto
Kamui clear black, ditto

Moori soft/med/hard
Predator Victory

I shoot with a Schon SL-7 with a pre-cat 314 Predator with whatever tip they put on that shaft from the factory and like it a lot. Any idea what tip Predator may have used on the pre-cat shafts?

I see when ordering a new LD many times you can spec an optional tip so I'm trying to educate myself on the various tips out there. In general I'd say I prefer a medium tip that would lend confidence and consistency to draw shots. Any thoughts on tips in general would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Here's a time saver for you. Check out Tom Hays's website. Google: UltraSkin layered cue tips.
Give Tom's new SIB a tryout. It's supposed to be the cat's pajamas. :)

To answer ur 1st question , im not sure what pred has on their old precat shaft but im very certain pred shaft has for a long time ( years ) use Victory tips as their default tips unless u specify to change during online orders.
Otherwise Victory tips, which i also feel plays reasonably good.
Victory tips are also made by pred f.y.i.

N yr 2nd question , if u like a tip to help with better draw shots , go for Kamui super soft or soft as soft tips allows u to have longer cue ball contact and it also generates more cue ball action n spin for the same reason.
However it also hits softer compare to a med or hard of course.

Theres nothing wrong w kamui med and hard tips so its more of a personal preference n alot still boils down to ur stroke.
Shane uses a kamui hard tip which i feel a little extreme but he draws the ball as good or better than anybody.
On the other hand, Darren appleton insist on his fb and az that everyone shld be using soft or super soft tips due to the fast cloth of modern pool equipments for better control

Another advice worth my 2cents, if u r using a really stiff shaft, soft tips will compliment it better n use a hard tip for softer shaft.

Also u might consider looking up G2 tips like kamui are also made in Japan which i believe is the best playing n most consistent tip out there currently Imo of course .
It only mushroom once after installation n after shaping it does not mushroom again n bites the cue ball with spin really well.
Kamui are great tips but i feel it hardens way too quickly.

My.0.02.
Good luck

Shooter1,
If you ask 10 people here you can easily get 20 different tip preferences. Everyone has something they like, including myself.

I went down the $20 plus tip route for years for myself as well as friends and customers paying to have tips installed.

This is truly going to come down to your personal preference and driven by your own confidence level.

That said, for the price of one Kamui tip you could buy 4 or 5 UltraSkin tips of different hardness and determine what works best for you.
It isn't just a cost thing for me, I personally use UltraSkin tips because IMO they perform just as well as the tips I was spending 4 to 5 times as much for.

I will still install a Kamui, Moori, Tiger etc. (hard, med, soft, super soft) or whatever the customer wants; however, when they ask me for a suggestion because they really don't know what works best for them, I suggest UltraSkin.
To date, I haven't had anyone complain but I have had repeat customers and word of mouth customers.

Thanks for that insight Cezar, that helps. I may move to a softer tip and see how it works.

After many years of playing them...and having tried numerous others...I always go back to the milkdud tips that pooldawg8 (AZ username) sells here on AZ. There's been numerous threads here on AZ giving more in-depth reviews and info on them...

Thanks,

I've tried most of these extensively, and install tips so I also get a lot of feedback from others. Here is what I think:

Kamui: If you have a competent installer, the clear plays exactly the same as the non clear. The bown and black are very different. Brown is less flexible and more to my liking at softer hardnesses. The brown grips the ball great, and has a more "direct" feel...you don't feel the tip flex when using english. The black, at soft and super soft, flexes quite a bit when tall or on a smaller diameter shaft. You feel the tip "load up" and then "spring back", which can create a ton of english, but it is very progressive...in that sometimes a little more input creates a LOT more output. The brown plays more linear. My favorite Kamui tip is the brown medium. Next would be the black medium (which is WAY less flexible than the soft.) The black medium is to me closer to a hard tip than a medium. Very nice tip though.

Moori: I haven't tried a moori in a long time. 10-15 years ago I loved the medium and medium hard before that. However I honestly can't comment on their newer stuff.

Predator Victory: this tip seems to be about 2 years old. Initially , I very much disliked it. It felt dull and lifeless to me. When I tried out the 3 series Predator shafts, I was ready to write them off as not that good until I tried them with different tips. When I got my own 314-3, I shot around with the Victory tip for a couple of days and actually came to like it better. Still, I think Kamui or other options are much nicer.

Other options: I think G2 might be the best tip out there now. If you like the old Moori's, I think the G2 comes the closest, but even advances that idea to the next level. I like the medium myself, but the hard is quite a nice tip as well. Haven't tried the soft myself. The quality is top notch. Very very nice tip. I play mainly with Predator 314-2, but I have some original 314's as well. I think the G2 medium would be a match made in heaven for your Pre Cat.

Also great tips out these days: Cyborg (I tried the medium and LOVED it), Tiger Emerald (big surprise here...this tip feels "invisible"...doesn't call attention to itself when you hit the ball, but plays *great*...good grip, holds its shape, nice hit, and CHEAP!)

FYI, somewhere in the middle of the 314-2 safts from Predator is when they switched to the Tiger Everest tip as standard equipment. Predator shafts before that came with a LePro. The new 3 series have the Victory tips.

Hope this helps!
