i just picked up my first run of machined aluminum bar stock, 1" square with dime radius machined into two sides and nickel radius machined into the other two sides.

I use epoxy fixed silicon carbide in two different grits so both nickel and dime have two different abrasives. Allows you to deliver the perfect tip radius to your customers.

This is a spin off of the "Last4Ever" tip tool shaping edge that I sell but is made for people who do a lot of tips. Basically, you rough out the tip shape as usual and then use the tool to provide an exact radius. Any interest out there?

Here are some photos of the raw material and a finished one with the silicon carbide applied.

I am still experimenting with different grits and materials and while I am selling the cloth backed aluminum oxide models i am interested on gauging market acceptance before I jump in with both feet.

The issue with the aluminum stock is the extreme amount of machining drives my cost way up, between the bar stock and machining I am around $29 per unit. So, my price point would need to be $49.95 for it make any sense to me.

I have done a few with red oak wood and a cloth backed aluminum oxide abrasive that works well. I started making them for myself as I do a lot of shaft work on my lathe and wanted a better way of finishing tips. I have since made a few for friends who do shaft work and I am just exploring the market. I can do the wood ones so considerably less since I don't have to sub out the radius cuts to a machine shop. Price point would be more like $24.95.

I would appreciate any and all feedback.

yeah, I understand... I almost had a heart attack yesterday when I went to the machine shop and picked up the stock. I am used to their price for the last4ever tip tool I sell, and, what I failed to realize is that I am machining 4 sides of this tool as opposed to one side.

Cost me $395 for 15 4" tools and that is just machining!!! Like I said, I was shocked. I am going to try again and just machine 2 sides and then put an abrasive for finishing tip sides and leather for burnishing and see where that cost comes out.

I can make you a wood one for $25 if you like. That is what I have been using until I had the great idea of making them in aluminum.

I can finish up some more red oak wood & cloth backed abrasive this weekend, I'm not done testing the aluminum & epoxy/silicon carbide tools but that will be done within a week or so. I have been using the wood and have made them for friends who do shaft work, I just recently decided to experiment with the aluminum.

Looks like a good application for extrusion.

If you can add value by including more functions, people will pay for it, for example, razor blade holder or bottle opener.
