Tip size:Shaft size

Hey guys probably a stupid question, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I just got a new cue and had them leave the shaft standard 13mm. My current shaft size is 12mm and I have a 12mm tip on it.

I want to try the 13mm shaft because I have big hands so I want to give it a shot. However I have a pack of 12mm tips and want to put one on so there is a little bit of continuity from my old cue.

The shaft size has no bearing on the tip size, right? Can I put a 12mm tip on a 13mm shaft?

You can, but you shouldn't. This just lowers how much tip can touch the cue ball, be ready for more miscues with any spin shots!

think about this.

Not without making the ferrule 12mm on your 13mm shaft.

When its all done and over with you will have two 12mm shafts'

You really should go to a cue repairman, You are in over your head.

Thanks boys, I was hoping for the best. I'm used to being in over my head. I'll just shoot it as it is for a while and see if I want to make a change.

Thanks again.

nothing wrong

Nothing wrong with being in over your head. Everyone has to start at the beginning .

Is the tips you have in 12 mm are they Elkmasters tips?

I don't think it will be a big problem if you just buy a bigger tip to put on your bigger shaft.

If you want to have a 13mm shaft with a 12 mm tip, you can get a cuemaker or someone that works on shafts often to make you a custom taper that is more conical. Most tapers are Pro which keep the same length for the first 10 or so inches then grow a bit.

If you have a taper that starts growing almost immediately, you can still use a narrow tip but keep a fatter shaft so it's comfortable. Keep in mind this will affect how the shaft plays and feels so you may want to try this taper on a cheap shaft you don't mind messing up.

Can you put a 12 MM tip on a 13 MM shaft, Why do you think they make tips in different sizes, Can you put a square peg in a round hole ? Like the other poster said if you have to ask this question then you are in way over your head. Go to a repair man that knows what he is doing....

They are 12mm elkmasters. I bought a box of 50. Not that I can't afford more, just thought I'd try A) to use them and B) because that's what I have on my cue I've played the last couple years with.

Just a simple question that I couldn't find info on, so I appreciate the answers.

Thanks man, way to add something to the conversation. Everybody appreciates some excessive patronizing when they ask a simple question.

Sure you can.

FYI, lots of info concerning the effects related to tip size and shape can be found here:

Yes, you can put a 12 mm tip on a 13 mm shaft. No harm will be done. The total difference is ten-thousands of an inch, and that is five-thousands on each edge. You probably can't even measure that. The 12 mm tip probably even starts out a bit bigger than the spec. You'll barely even notice it, and after one evening of play, the tip will probably mushroom out to at least the ferrule diameter. You won't miscue any more, it's no big deal, and it's not like you're mixing ammonia and bleach. Don't worry too much about it. Trust me, sometimes these posts take themselves way too seriously.
