Tip won't hold chalk

I recently tried a Tiger Sniper. The first one wasn't installed correctly so I had another put on. It worked well for a couple days then got really hard and I couldn't get it to hold chalk. So I went back and had them put on a Moori Med. Now I am having the same problem with it. Seems like I have to scuff the tip every 5 minutes or else it will just glaze over. I can hardly get through a rack without a miscue. What am I doing wrong? Is it the way I chalk? Am I just hitting the balls too hard? Should I try a different tip?

Well soft tips really mushroom a lot for me and get hard eventually anyways. I would rather have a medium or hard tip.

I use regular Masters Blue chalk at home and at the pool hall.

The only way I can think that the tip would get wet is when I burnish the sides using a dollar bill and a little bit of spit. But its not like I get spit on the top I just wet the sides a little bit.

An old trick. Buy a four way file at the local hardware store. Now pound on that tip (with the fine side) for a good five minutes. You are tenderizing the leather and it will soften up. Then scuff it and chalk up. It should hold chalk now.

I wouldn't recommend using a 'tip pick' on a layered tip.

I use a Tip Pik on my Everest tips often, and it works just fine. Of course, I'm not mashing the Tip Pik through 2+ layers when I'm using it. I lightly roll the Tip Pik to make the surface porous enough to hold chalk without actually stripping off layers by scuffing.

dito...i play with morri medium tips and use a tip pic. press it down a little bit then roll it around to cover all of the tip...works just fine and i have had the same tip for 8 or 9 months now

Does anyone know if a LePro tip is a Med or hard? I had one put on at the local pool hall for 8 bucks and I have no idea?

As far as getting your tip to Hold the Chalk, I keep a Tip Tapper and a little
1/2 moon shaped sander in all my cases. You may just need to shape it up a bit.:)

I've tried the willards shaper and tapper, the ultimate and just sandpaper and fifteen minutes later I have to bust it out again because the chalk won't stick. I'll have to try some of the suggestions listed here.

FWIW I do exactly the same thing as Mr. Helfert and it works like a charm.
I use a Hercules hard tip and have not had a single problem with miscues or glazing.

I believe Le Pro is considered medium-hard.

ive been using mori-med for many years now and every so often (less than once a month) I actually WET the tip (just from a wet finger or something) if it stops holding chaulk....wet it slightly, clean with a napkin and let dry....works like a charm....i think it just raises the leather grain a little.

I suspect it's the chalk. I've recently seen pieces of the same brand here that were very different in how they went on the tip.

Sometimes the exposed surface of the chalk gets glassy. Rub that surface on a coarse file or #120 sand paper to get down to a "new" level, then form as deep a dimple as you want in the face of the chalk with a dime (possible held in vise-grips).
