Tipping the tournament director

Regardless if a TD takes tips or not, there will always be a player or players that thinks the TD 'favors' other players.

I will admit, that players that cause problems during a tournament are not encouraged to come back. With that said, I do favor the more civil players.

If a TD takes money I will accuse him of engaging in conflict of interest.I will argue that the TD may do favor to the players who gave gifts ( bribes)

I've been the poolroom TD for 8 years and I don't receive monetary compensation from the room. I get free food and drinks on tournament day, including liquor. I choose not drink alcohol during the tournament, so that noone can say that the TD made a bad call because he was drinking. I may stick around after the tournament for a couple of drinks, but I usually don't. I have received tips for a well run tournament that finished in a timely manner, while all the rules are enforced equally and good sportsmanship is enforced.

I don't think that I've ever received more than $5 from any player and noone has EVER suggested that any favoritism has been shown (though there are some players that expect preferential treatmeant). I don't find anything wrong in a player throwing a few bucks to a TD and saying ,"buy yourself a drink" for a job well done. I don't look for tips, expect a tip or ask for a tip, but I've never turned one down, either.

In the small, local tournaments, If I won $20 or more, I usually tipped the td. I have to say that nowadays, I take into consideration the td's reputation. Some have a rep for sometimes "fixing" the chart so some of the stronger players play the weaker ones right off the bat.

I usually tip out 5% if I cash, maybe a bit more if I really think they did an outstanding job. Down here in South Florida, the TDs do not get paid to run the tournaments. Usually its either run by the room owner (Hollywood Billiards) or another person who gets free pool time and free entry into the tourny for running the weekly tournament (sharpshooters).

If the TD gets paid by taking a bite from every player that enters, then I might reconsider whether its appropriate to tip.

I get Free pooltime as a TD, but I haven't utilized that perk in over two years. Planet 9-Ball doesn't charge a 'green's fee' or a charge for the TD and they Add money to the entry money ($150 Added). They hold the tournaments FOR the poolplayers and I act as TD because I love pool and try to contribute in a small way.

There are two things you must remember. #1. When a pool room has a tournament and adds money, the room is taking a chance that day. I think it is safe to say that room owners are not in business to lose money. Will the room generate enough extra business from those players to cover the added money and pay the T.D. to boot? If it ever gets to the point where the rooms find that the added money and the T.D. fee is just too much, you will see less tournaments. Who does that hurt in the long run? The players. Don't force the rooms to cover so many expenses that they indeed are forced to make the decision to cut back their tournaments, cut back on the added money, or even stop running tournaments! #2. Good tournament directors are almost impossible to find. If they do a horrible job running the tournament, don't tip them. If they do a good job, then tip them. Don't force the good T.D.'s to make the decision that it is just not worth it. We really need as many good ones and we can get!

I have never tipped the TD but I always tip the head bartender. I don't drink but figure they work hard and can use a few extra bucks. Plus they always get my sodas or waters without delay. I usually give them between 5% & 10%. To me pool is fun and if I get some cash all the better.
