Tips of English

I use back-hand english and I pivot 1 tip at a time. In other words, say I am applying 2.5tips of english I pivot 1 tip then another tip over and then 1/2 tip over.

I do this to make sure I am exactly putting the amount of english on the cue ball that I want. I find that I am more successful using this method.

What do you guys think about this?

I think you'd be even more successful if you stopped thinking of sidespin in terms of "tips". "Tips" and "half tips" are too large and approximate as increments, and thinking in terms of "tips" means you're focusing on how far you're moving the shaft, not how far you're moving the actual tip/ball contact point. Not to mention that nobody but you knows exactly what you mean by it.

It should be measured in millimeters.

If you are talking 2.5 "tips", the difference is substantial for someone with an 11.5 mm, compared to someone with a 13 mm diameter tip.

so when you are about to go down on a shot what do say to yourself about how much spin you are going to put on the cue ball?

I can't speak for Patrick, however I typically characterize it as "a little", "some" and "a lot".

The positional requirements dictate how much spin I use, so for the most part it is automatic.

this works just fine

This is a good way to get a more repeatable movement. Any unit of measure that doesn't have a visual reference is equally bad. I can estimate in millimeters, tenths of an inch, or ten-thousandths of an inch, it is still just an estimate. However you are able to remember where the outside of your tip was long enough to replace it fairly accurately with the inside of your tip so you are actually using your tip as a measuring tool with your method.

As a general statement, measuring will always be more accurate than estimating. This is a good tip you have given and as you mentioned, it works for you.

I tried to play with backspin and it really ruin my stroke. It is helpful in some extreme situations, but normally I would play the spin with a forward motion.

i do everything by feel.it seems to be working

Just Do It

I might say "use a tip of right" if I am talking to a partner or team mate about how to stroke a shot but when shooting, I just do it.

The amount of spin changes with speed and stroke so if you don't have good feel for the shot, its just a poke in the dark anyway.

I simply visualize exactly which spot I want to hit on the CB to get the CB action I want - I don't think of it as how much spin I want or how far from centerball I want to move my stick. If I have to describe it to somebody else I'll use terms like "5/8 of maximum at 10 o'clock" or "75% of maximum at 7 o'clock" or "1/8 inch from centerball at 12:30" - again, not in terms of how far to move the stick, but in terms of which spot on the CB to hit.

The important thing to me is that I be as precise as possible and that I focus on the actual tip/ball contact point.
