Tips on tips?

My name is Vince and I used to be with Black Boar. I've been off the radar for umpteen years and in that time it seems a revolution has occurred in the science of tips. Back then Mooris were just coming onto the scene and now....I have noooo clue what's out there. Can anyone break it down for me? I played nothing but ivory ferrules, do you put a backing on these things like the old Champions? When I left the game I played Triangles or Elk Masters if I could find one thick enough. Who makes these multilayered things? Is it one company pumping them put under different brand names? Do they mushroom badly? I think I saw one that had buffalo hide. Seriously? And the price.....does the price reflect any semblance of quality? How do they differentiate soft from medium from hard?

Snipers tips are soft but I still like them and all soft tips mushroom.......................
Kamui tips are good tips to and they come in Super soft ,soft , medium, and hard.

ultra skins tips are good to and you can buy them from azb member tom hay
he is great to deal with and he is very supportive to billiards.
And his tips come in different hardness too.

Onxy tips are ok but in my opinion they glaze easy but I would still shoot with one.

I also like triangle tips..

I do not know if I answer your question or not.

My 3 favorite tips are kamui, sniper, and ultra skins .

I shoot with a solid maple shafts if that makes a difference.
 
Kamui is sort of the gold standard right now. Most of the old names are still out there, but if you're just coming back to the scene after being gone a long time, Kamui will be the big new name you might not be familiar with. My latest tip is a Karomi, which is another Japanese brand that plays really well. The Karomi plays fine, but I'll probably go back the Kamui next. I found them on Amazon 2 for $32, which is the cheapest I've seen them if you don't know a wholesaler. They're pretty expensive for what they are, but I like how they play. The Karomi was $8 from a local guy who puts on tips, which is probably a better value. I've never tried the sniper or ultra skin mentioned above.
 
I've tried most. I never played one that I liked hands down to all the rest until the other night. I bought a cue that had g2 mediums and can tell you that this is what I will be playing with for a while. They are said to resemble the playability of the old Moore's. The past few months, I've been shooting triangles which are probably my second favorite. I have tried ultrasound but didn't really take to them. I have also tried snipers, Kamuii, Everest, etc. Renfro's outsville tips are on my short list to try. He seems very well educated on tip consistencies. Probably a great product.

Ive tried Sniper, Everest, Le Pro, Kamui Black SS, Kamui Black S, Kamui Black M, Kamui Black H, Ultraskin M, Morri Quick, and finally Triangle. Out of all those tips I liked the Sniper, Kamui Black M, Kamui Black H, Ultraskin M, and my current favorite the good old Triangle. Triangles just seem to get the job done and feel the best to me. I've noticed I like harder tips but for each person it will be different. Not really going to know how each play unless you actually play with them.
 
There is a device called a durrometer that is used tomeasure hardness. It measures how deep a steel ball can be pushed into the leather from a given known force. Soft tips are in the 60-65 range on the durrometer, mediums in the 66-75 range, medium hard 76-80, and hards in the 80-85 range, then there are super softs, extra hards, and super hards for break cues and jump cues. I have found that pigskin tips hold chalk better than water buffalo tips, even when both are essentially the same hardness (on the durrometer.)

I happen to like my tips in the 81-83 range, and in particular, I play Talisman tips.
