Wondering if anyone still use a NON LAYERED Tip longer, as it seem everytime Tips are discussed it alway Layered Tips.

Wondering if non layered Tips have gone the was of the Crank Start model T?

Yes I still see many Non Layered Tip on house Cues, and Inexpensive production Cues. But it appear the New Fangled Layered Tips are taking over the Tip business. ;)

I use Sumo.
I like them a little better than Moori.
But that is just me.
Might be the price difference :p
:D

Hey Bruce! Thanks for bringing this up. I was going to do it but, you beat me to it. The Triangle & even a good Lepro are good tips. I have a new Hercules layered tip installed on one of my cues. To be honest, I cannot see a night & day difference between any of them. I guess the bottom line here is longer tip life. I know many Pros prefer Moori tips but, I think these guys n Gals can shoot with anything! I know Keith Mcready can, even though he prefers a Moori tip.

My current preference is for the Talismans... The price is right, and they play just fine, thank you....

I have the following Talisman tips on my cues: Hard, on my retapered sneaky pete; slow, on my Meucci black-dot; and Break Tip on a noname cue...

Have used Moori Hard/Medium/Soft or Quick/Medium/Slow as they call them; Triangle; LePro; Phenolic; Talisman Water Buffalo.

The Talismans are consistent and the price is right...

Ive been playing with TIGER HARD LAYERED TIPS, they work AWSOME....

Muellers doesn't sell Moori's so when I needed a new tip, I tried a Talisman at about half the cost of a Moori. Within one week, it started to sound funny and I noticed that it was coming unlayered (is that a word?). I took it back to show them and Muellers, bless their hearts, gave me a refund in form of a credit. I used it on a Tsunami. That was about a month ago and the Tsunami is working as well as the Moori tips....same feel, etc....and no splitting. Note: It could have been just one bad tip, not a fundamental flaw in Talisman's design/production.

Btw, the salesman said they sell more LePro's than anything else.

I use a Moori medium. I have used both Triangle and Lepro in the past. They are both good tips, but the reason that I prefer Moori is because once you shape it, you never have to mess with it again. It also lasts a lot longer (like 3-4 times longer).

So I'm going to the pro-shop tonight to switch from a non-layered to a layered tip. Here's my question: I've used a Triangle for about the last 15 years, and I like the hit, but I'm ready to switch to a layered tip (mostly for durability, since it's a pain for me to get to the pro-shop).

If I get a Moori, what level of hardness would be closest to the hit of a Triangle?

Which Talisman would be closest?

Thanks,
Cory

Meuller's Catalog gives the relative hardness of the tips they sell. They rate the Talisman Hard tip is the exact same as the Triangle, 81.4.

There are a few things that Talisman strongly suggests you do and don't do to their tips, taken from here:

http://www.talismanbilliards.com/FAQ.asp

1. Consider professional installation and show our installation suggestions to your repair guy.
2. Do not leave the tips too tall after installation and shaping.
3. Do not use any tip shaping tools which use blades to shape the tip radius
4. Do not use a tool like the ultimate cue tip tool to burnish the sides of the tip unless the tip is shaped to a taper as well. We advise against its use.
5. Do not apply any liquid to the sides of the tip to shine or burnish.
6. Do not tap the tip with a tip tapper.
7. Basically leave the tip alone except for chalking and the occasional scuffing or reshape.

=====

After following their advice, I've had no problems whatsoever with their tips, and am very pleased with them. By the way, if you aren't happy with the tips, they will fully refund the purchase price of the tips, PLUS $10 for any possible installation costs you may have incurred. Is that a deal, or what? :D

Cheers,

Flex

I've been a big devotee of Moori soft, but I'm beginning to rethink it. I had a Stratos x-hard tip which I had further pressed put on a Dufferin Phantom to use as a break cue. A couple of times I just wanted to bring a cheap cue for various reasons so I took the Dufferin with the Stratos. I really liked the way it played and am considering a harder tip on my main playing cue. I've also had good luck with a Stratos soft, Moori medium, and an Everest which I think equates to a medium.
Talisman I was disappointed with as more often then not they delaminate. I had it put on by the same person who does my Mooris (and the Stratos). Never a problem with the Mooris so I've got to think it is the Talisman. Maybe you have to be extra carefully with a Talisman, but if that's the case I consider that a defect in and of itself.

I think maybe you just haven't been paying attention.

Do a search on tips. Also, the September 2004 issue of InsidePOOL Magazine has an article on tips.

Fred <~~~ still using Triangle tips

Tips

Shot with LePro tips over 30 years, went to Hercules layered
medium hard tip, and I will not go back to non layered tip.

The difference is companrable to driving on wet pavement (LePro)
as opposed to driving on dry pavement (Hercules).

Ive shot with several layered tips and hated them all. Imo you cant go wrong with a triangle cut down real small.
