Tired of hearing about lessons...

Sorry if this post as already been addressed. Late to this thread.

I just about agree with you here. Some people think if you miss a shot you need to spend a few hundred dollars with an instructor. Someone told me once the best lesson you can get is simply getting out into the pool rooms and playing against competition, entering tournaments, spending hours at the table, etc.

I know a lesson that covers the basics is probably good but other than that the best lessons are those learned in pool halls, pool rooms, tournaments, etc.
This is downright hilarious coming from you. First your screen name is in reference to being a student from a pro player. Second I dont beleive you ever took that advice of getting out and playing...

There used to be a lot of people on here that said you should read some silly a$$ book called Pleasures Of Small Motions, that it would help your game a great deal. What a joke that was.

r/DCP
This too is hilarious coming from you. You are the kinda person that asks for advice and if it is something you dont want to hear then you immediately dismiss it as not helpful when in reality it probably is and is also probably coming from someone who took that advice from someone else.

I was one of the many people that read that book and recommend it too you. Your numerous threads about not being able to run out at home was what made me recommend it to you. The game isnt always about running out. You needed (and possible still need) to get your head right then and understand that.

This book and getting out and playing others and seeing that you can win without breaking and running was probably the best advice you have ever gotten on here. We know for a fact you just dismissed the book and I would put money on that you dont really get out to shoot much.

I agree that these posts should stop. We need to get back to more important topics like "What is the best tip?", "Who makes the best cue?", "What is the best shaft?", and "How much is this cue worth?"

How happy are you to have started another lengthy thread about pool instruction?

You're too young, but you should have been here during the CTE war. Oh, the humanity.
Thousands were killed, many more were injured. I myself was in intensive care for a day and a half. JoeyA, suffered a concussion and still hasn't recovered.
Yep, this here is mere child's play.

Seen you take lessons

I never had lessons
I thought they were a lot like seeing a psychologist or marriage counselor

I viewed it as a desperate action that usually preceded quitting

There again,my pool never got much better

I have seen you take quite a few lessons, as a matter of fact I helped
pay for some. But most of the time we gave the lessons.

I just love an argument with no chance at being settled.

My stroke has gotten a lot better. I make shots comfortably now that were very difficult a year ago. And for awhile there when I'd lose I would blame it on the last shot I missed and assume that all I had to do was keep working on those drills and I'd be better.

Lately my lessons haven't been about my stance, bridge, stroke or aiming. Lately they have been focused on patterns and strategy. You see, it turns out that more often than not when I lose a game it wasn't the last shot I missed that lost it for me. It was the first or second shot I made that most likely sealed my fate.

What I didn't understand while learning to pocket balls was that making the shots was the easy part. Learning which shots to make (or not make) and when was the important part. And only through the pattern and strategy lessons, where each decision is dissected one by one and I just now starting to at least realize what I don't know and how significant that is for my game. I got a small taste of that last week in league when being patient and picking the right pattern left me with an easy 4 ball run to the 8. Not one shot was more difficult than a simple cut shot and shape was either a little follow or a stop shot on each ball. I am still a beginner and still have a ton to learn but at least now I am starting to get a glimpse of just how much I don't know yet.

I might have been able to pick up that lesson in a bar but I'm guessing it would have taken me much longer to come to that.

That's my $.02 on lessons.

the "reflection process" and how it relates to perception and awareness

It's a shame, but AZB has gradually become a less welcoming place, certainly compared to when I first started reading here.

That's not to say there aren't friendly, helpful, non-judgmental people still here. It's just that the overall tenor of the forum has changed. Likely a reflection of society in general, I suppose...

There is still help to be found here, plenty of great material and many who will try and help you. You just have to have a tougher skin, and learn to ignore some stuff. (Point made to the guy I see in the mirror, as well.)

When we understand the deeper meaning of the "reflection process" and how it relates to perception and awareness it loses it's power.

It's actually called "projection" .....

Could you explain that to me? My zen-speak translator is at the shop this week. :p

Hi Bruce,

It might mean something like, 'do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.

Or, We're all of one Family in God's eyes.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

Well, if that's what he meant, I'm all good with that.

Sadly, in my opinion, there isn't enough of that today. And that was what I meant by a "reflection of today's society". If more people would treat people the way they would like to be treated themselves, we would all be better off.

That's not how things are today, in my eyes. Certainly not here on AZB.

This isn't "zen," it's taken from Carl Jung's study of projection*

Could you explain that to me? My zen-speak translator is at the shop this week. :p

This isn't "zen," it's taken from Carl Jung's study of projection*. We unconsciously project our own "stuff" on others and they judge it to be "good or bad". It's more complex than this brief explanation - here's a link if you want to learn more.

*

Projection. An automatic process whereby contents of one's own unconscious are perceived to be in others. (See also archaic, identification and participation mystique.)
Just as we tend to assume that the world is as we see it, we navely suppose that people are as we imagine them to be. . . . All the contents of our unconscious are constantly being projected into our surroundings, and it is only by recognizing certain properties of the objects as projections or imagos that we are able to distinguish them from the real properties of the objects. . . . Cum grano salis, we always see our own unavowed mistakes in our opponent. Excellent examples of this are to be found in all personal quarrels. Unless we are possessed of an unusual degree of self-awareness we shall never see through our projections but must always succumb to them, because the mind in its natural state presupposes the existence of such projections. It is the natural and given thing for unconscious contents to be projected.["General Aspects of Dream Psychology," Ibid, par. 507.]"

I certainly agree with you in general.

I also know that I am not the best turn the other cheek kind of guy.

I certainly need to work on that.

I think it might come from my playing team sports. I have a difficult time seeing something bad happening to a teammate & I just want to help & usually the bully types only understand one language.

Then I get the 'bullies' attention & that not being good at turning the other the cheek thing gets into play.

The Meek shall inherit the Earth. I just hope it's not full of bullies when they do.

Best 2 You & Yours & All,
Rick

PS The Meek, I think, also have issues at times with others taking on the bullies. I certainly understand their position.

So I must ask you, do you believe then that I am projecting my own shortcomings in proclaiming that society in general, and AZB in particular treats each other too poorly today, certainly in comparison to past years?

That's what I'm taking from your responses. If that is incorrect, kindly attempt to explain it one more time (I'll give up if I still can't interpret the philosophy). Thanks

This is human nature, and it's above my "pay scale" to make any judgments

This was not about you, it's about those you were referring to that treat each other poorly on AZ at times.....they are simply projecting their own ideas, beliefs, values, and attitudes. This is human nature, and it's above my "pay scale" to make any judgments about this behavior.

Most of the people on this website now, unfortunately, are bangers, and leaguers, and will not get much better than they are now.

There are some advanced players and pros here too who will unfortunately get even more not much better than they are now than the league players. The curve is much steeper.

Thank you for the explanation.

I agree with you.

You may be right, but it's apples and oranges.
And, JC, you might try working a little harder on your syntax. Just a thought.

Glad to have a chance to communicate more effectively, thanks

Thank you for the explanation.

I agree with you.

I apologize for not being more clear, my schedule''s been hectic and posted too quickly.

Glad to have a chance to communicate more effectively, thanks for giving me the opportunity. Sometimes it's tough for me to communicate as well as I'd like {in writing}, maybe it's all that "misspent" time in the pool rooms. ;)

Play Well, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
