Titlist veneer brightness?

Good morning Gentlemen.

I have a quick question.

I am finishing up my Titlist project and currently have it at final taper.

After I was satisfied with the taper and finish, I sealed the cue with Cyano to hold it and keep it clean until I could polish the pearl and apply the 'real' finish.

I noticed that the vibrant colors of the veneers are not so vibrant any longer. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it due to applying the Cyano, the fact that I did not cut very deeply into the veneers (although they were all cut and/or sanded) or something else?

Thanks for the insight. I'd like the colors to be vibrant; however right now this looks like a conversion done many years ago...

Here's the link to the cue in question: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=161757

I think the faded veneer colors you see in some Titlists has to do with how much sun fading has taken place. That's the only thing I could up with when I see one. Even after some material is removed I think the fading goes deeper into the veneers than just on the surface. On your cue were the colors bright or just after you applied the cyano?

I did notice the 'vibrance' (if thats is even a word:confused:) of the colors did vary from point to point (some brighter than others), but that did not concern me- I assume it was that way from day one.

What did happen is that the colors in the 'as-sanded' condition were brighter than they are now in the 'cyano sealed and sat a couple days' condition. As sanded they looked bright and more like what I have seen in other Titlist conversions. That being said, the blue/green veneer was noticeably darker than I have seen, and the purple looked about as I expected it to look.

I am unsure if this was an instant change (which I don't think so) or if it was a reaction with the cyano as it cured fully, or something else, like maybe the UV exposure (although it has not seen much UV at all) has dulled it. I have also heard of delivberately exposing certain colored woods to intense UV to bring out colors... Would this be a good idea? I have access to a high-intensity UV light, but will not expose this until I hear it is a good idea?

I was just looking for guidance from those who have done these conversions before and what their experience was/is. This is my first Titlist and overall it is going OK, just a bit bummed the colors are not 'popping' as I have seen them before...

It really looks like that cue has seen a lot of sunny days in the poolhall. I don't think you'll get any brighter colors than that.

That kind of sucks...

I will give them a fresh sanding right before I shoot the clear.

Hopefully, that will hold them brighter, even if just a little bit...
