To all the Austin, TX poolplayers out there.

I go to Austin Texas 2-3 times a year to visit and to pick up my son(age 12). I'm here to see him and do things he likes to do. After a few days of his activities, I talk him into hitting a poolhall so I can stop shaking. I usually go to The Main Event, Clicks or Slick Willies on S. Lamar(Buffalos once).
After hearing all the hype on AZ, I made it to "The Grand" today with my son and wow. This place was a lot better than any so far in Austin. The house cues were nicer(don't bring my cue with me) and the tables were faster and better (8 & 9 foot Brunswicks). Cloth was a little worn but still faster than the others. The bartender/waitress was super nice also. They charged me $4 for 2 hours of table time :thumbup: There were a lot of serious players in there with nice cues which I liked also.
I'll try and hit the Warehouse off of 71 and S. Congress tomorrow and see how they compare. If you are planning a trip to Austin, check out "The Grand" for sure. I'll venture up to Skinny Bob's when I come back for SXSW in spring. :thumbup:

Wow, I tought it was still Erick's billiards. I had no idea it changed to the Grand. You might like the Warehouse, their tables are fast and play great. But you definatley have to take your cue. Awsome table! Terrible sticks!
 
I was there last night until about midnight. I even stopped at the Warehouse on my way back to the room (was dead in there so I didn't play any). Tonight I'll probably make it up to Skinny Bob's, but I probably won't last long in there if they still allow smoking inside. If you want to hit some this week, send me a PM.
 
Smoking!

Most of the pool halls in Texas still allow smoking..., because our Governor is a loser..., so enjoy your stay, but you will have to fade the smoke

Wow, what happened? I went by there 3 times and it looked packed everytime .

I'll defintly check out Skinny Bobs on my next trip. I go where there's no smoking because of my son. Today is my last day in Austin. I'm trying to make it over to The Warehouse today. I don't bring my cues because I only go once or twice to a poolhall while I'm here. Might be living here for a few months soon and I'll look you guys up. I stay on W.11th St. Between the court house and the new skatepark. Thank you for all the great info. Ron. Keep Austin weird!

Yep, it's true. I was over there last night and it was crazy busy since it was the last night. I've done a lot of my playing over there the last few years so I hate to see it go. I usually shoot early in the afternoon and I could always find someone to play if I wanted to or just chill out and practice around by myself. I guess I'll start hitting up The Grand which is cool and the other places in town more too.

Why is Slicks closing? I don't know for sure(lots of rumors lol) but I think it was a situation of the rent going up to much for it be doable as a pool hall anymore. There was originally talk of it being shrunk down some but that went out the window in the last two weeks when they told eveyone it was going to close instead. All of South Lamar has been going up market and upscale for a long time. Commercial space in that area is now renting for way more than it used too! I guess it was a matter of time before it affected the pool hall:(

Does anyone know why they closed? Everytime we went there it was a good experience for my son & I. Wasn't packed but, wasn't dead either. Just slow tables and crappy house sticks(suppose to bring your own anyway). It was real cheap to play there. I think I just answered my own question?? I would've went if I knew it was closing. That's why it was packed when I drove by. Thought it was league or tournament night or something. Well, hopefully someone else opens it. Ron

Property owner raised the monthly rent from $1400 to $2300 (may be missing a zero in the dollar amounts; 14 and 23 are the numbers I remember). The operators looked at the cash flow and said no.
 
Yeah, I think you missed a zero there! LOL Even $2300 would be VERY cheap commercial rent...$23K not so much.

Back in Austin for a week and made it to "The Warehouse Saloon & Billiards" today. Very nice bar and hall. Great staff and really clean. Hourly was all you can play $3 from noon to 4pm I believe(that's all i paid) Going to try Skinny Bobs tomorrow hopefully.

The smoking issue is usually a local decision. I'm in Beaumont, there's no smoking here at pool halls, unless you become a private club. Many places have built on, special patio areas for smokers. IMO it's not the Govenor's fault.
