To Become Known And Trusted?

i still believe that the waning interest in pool in general and our crappy economy are to blame for "the starving cuemaker syndrome"

Brent, I respectfully disagree ...

I think the main issue are there are a lot of cuemakers and wanna be cuemakers in the market ... it's highly saturated and competitive niche market. I think it's very tough for someone to enter into the business/market full or part time expecting to make profit/living from it.

I appreciate custom cue makers and their work. And I really believe cue prices are very low compared to amount of hours it must go in to produce a cue. Having said that, for most cue makers, I think it must be labor of love. My local cue maker is very discouraged as he said "there is no money in making cues" and he makes very high quality cue.

i respectfully agree with you . i'm making about 19 cents an hour

Just a thought ...

but sometimes the name carries a certain connotation to it, and well, J&D tells me you are old time, and sounds more like a plumbing company than a cuemaker (No offense intended J&D or Brent). Now this is just an example, and my opinion, but if you had spelled it 'JayDee' Customs in lieu of J&D, it fits better with cues, IMO.

You not only have to make a good cue, you have to know how to present and market it right. Putting woods together in a cue that aren't appealing, or ugly inlays, or an ugly wrap, cheap $5 ferrules or $2 tips, are not going to cut it. Having a name that is not appealing isn't either.

And like it or not, the internet is the BEST WAY to get out of region customers in the shortest time. Having a good website is almost a requirement for any cuemaker today wanting to expand his customer base.
I would recommend going to look at 'Layani' and 'Zac' and 'ArnotQ' cues website as good examples.

How many 'Woodpecker' cues do you think have been sold? And there is a reason they are called 'Gina' cues, and not 'Ernies' cues.

Makin' Cues

Figure out whether you want to sell 600 plain cues on ebay or less at a higher quality. There are all levels of cue makers.

Donate some cues at tournaments, auction some off here - and get them in the hands of some good shooters. Have the winners post a review of your cue.

Get a website, but tell why your cues are different. Get a library of cues on your site as examples. List what they cost and what the extras are.

Repair bunches of cues to show folks you can do quality work and repairs.

If you are not in there, the Blue Book of Cues is looking for you with Volume 4.
Look at the blue book, and send them more info than some of the 4 line resumes that are there.

I am jealous that you can building cues, and I am not.
