To New Cue Makers - "The Hit" & Philosophy

Joey Gold often gets criticized for his prices. I used to hold the opinion, which I now know to be wrong, that any competent factory such as McDermott could reverse engineer a Cog and offer the same performance for a lot less.

After meeting Joey at his place and spending several hours going through each step of how he builds a cue I concluded that it would be difficult to divine the methods Joey uses based on a completed cue.

He applies the same methods every time to his cuemaking, he has his processes down to a science. At least that's impression I had when I was there and every Cog I have owned or handled has been pristine as far as I can remember.

JB,

Saw your post and comments about Joey. I grew up with Joey and have known him for more than 40 years. He is the example that all cue makers should strive for concerning putting out cues with reference to perfection.

Joe is a perfectionist kind of guy with a lot of talent. If he does not like a cue he is building for some reason, he goes over to the band saw and cuts it in half & throws it in the garbage. Very aggressive Quality Control but this is his mechanism for protecting his brand which is known for highest quality worldwide. His cues do reflect the hard work and dedication he puts into his product.

This is why he gets big bucks for his cues, reputation! Plus it does not hurt that his cues are well known for their famous hit and playability.
