How are the guys who have them dealing with the dust and debris being an issue? Sony was a fix to that problem, but now they aren't making the good scales anymore and Newall.. WOW. I have heard of a guy using an fish aquarium air supply hose to keep the dust out. Any other ideas or solutions?

DROs are about as current as punched tape.

Sell it to a museum.
Buy one of those no-head digital calipers on fleabay for $9.

Now for the serious side - do you have a DRO?
If so, you will get much better answers on something
like rec.metalworking - or some other machining discussion group.

I was going to put a set of DRO on my cue lathe, but decided not to.
The DRO installed properly takes time to install. It is not easy to remove the cross slide.
On my cue lathe , I prefer to use for the Z axis a travel dial indicator. I like analog-dials instead of digital.
The didgit read out I have goes funny if it gets any water on it or in very humid conditions, gives false readings.

To allow tapering etc I needed to go to the 1m long scale for the z axis.Which ment quite a bit is protruding the end of the lathe.
DRO on the metal working parts lathe is really good.

DRO's

I have a DRO installed on my lathe and mill--both Grizzly models.
Absolutely no problems of any kind. The time you save as well as
the accuracy of your cuts make them worthwhile IMO although
they are pricey.

Newall actually makes a good product that replaces glass scales. They use round balls inside an aluminum tube I believe. Dust proof. These would be my first choice:

Jim.

i have a Sony magnetic on my Jet lathe and have never had any trouble at all and i only clean my lathe when it gets so full of dust that i have to.

they save alot of time and they also elimnate the,"oops i missed by .002-.003" you sometimes get with the end of the caliper method.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The newall is the nutts especially since Sony doesn't make the good scale anymore. Then you realize how much the newall costs. :(. Anyone else had any luck with the less expensive before I go with the newall?
