Todds CNC cutting shaft

A lesson in marketing

I am not a Snake Oil salesman. I didn't even know the slimy creatures bought oil but should have figured it out since they shed their skin.

I do however know how to market things I believe in.

On the "Ouch" thread in the same time period we had a two page discussion on here and that video had 300 views. On this thread we had one responce and last I checked 4 video views.

Did I make an enemy or two? Sure, but your not going to please everyone anyway. I used to sell High End Roofs to condominiums in South Florida, 1/2 mill to a mill upwards. When the association of say 10 people voted once I got 6 votes nothing else mattered. I rarely if ever got all 10 votes. If I wasted my time on the ones that were dead set against voting for my company I would chance losing the 6 needed.

It is the same in the Pool Gig. Not everyone will like my Tips or my cues or like Todds lathe. It is a natural occurance. That is why you have many Tip manufactures, Cue Makers Case makers etc.

This is a Forum, a discussion group, its purpose is to discuss views. Without discussion AZB does not exist or have a purpose. Check the threads, the long ones are where people disagree and get involved, the short ones that die quick are no brainers where everyone agrees.

You have done a good job.
I like cutting towards the head stock as to cutting to the tail stock.
Mainly due to a lot of machines having some form feed stop at the head stock end.

That's what I told him.
Rapid to the end of X on all cuts.
Taper towards the spur driver.
Makes it easier to match the collar sizes too.
Make files just to touch up the first 3 inches of the shafts and butts.
In a perfect world, they'd all have the same joint collar sizes after a long run.
But, it's not perfect world unless you have servos.

Okay, here comes a probably stupid question. Couldn't I just reverse the G codes? The cutter blades go the way of cut now. If I chaged to a 6 Wing cutter on 1/4" mandrel I think by turning it upside down I could get the best of all worlds?

You'd be climb cutting if you cut towards the chuck and the router in front of you.
If your Y is not on half step and center is Y0, an .840 joint would be Y.420.
A 1.250" bottom would Y.625.
X29 Y.625
X00 Y.420
Would be the basis of your butt taper.
If you set the Y to half step on Mach 3, it makes it easier.
.840 joint would be Y.840.

It gets a little tougher on the shaft but reversing the order shouldn't be tough.
But, double check b/c you might crash on the wood ( butt taper ).

Tom,
The great thing about CNC is that it will do what you want. You don't have to have 0,0 at the head stock. You decide where you want to start and where and how you want to go. Every machine has a sweet spot for cutting.
It may be climb cutting or it may be conventional cutting. Feed rate and rotation rate all pay a factor. Same with the type and size of cutter. Trial and error is about the only way to really tweak it in. Todd's machine will have it's own caracteristics. You have to figure out what it likes and what it doesn't like.
Joey, what in the hell is half mode. How about radius or diameter.

Mr Steven Klien,

Yes, I agree 100%. Sweet spots and charicteristics of a machine. I both understand and feel what you are saying. I believe you must also understand the woods you are cutting, amount of cuts you can do before replacement or sharpening of the cutter.

I wish I had your talent or even my old Cue making partners Richie. In many ways I held him back, he had true ability. I am a hack but still love and appreciate everything about Cue Making.

I am in it for one more Cue, a Break Jump to go with my playing cue. After that I plan to just enjoy the great works of functional Art I see posted daily.

There is a big differance in knowing how and actualy doing but it lets me understand how and why when I see great weapons such as yours.

To be any part if only a player and Tip Salesman of the greatest game ever invented is a pleasure I hope to carry till the day I pass.

Thank you for your input, we play in a true gentlemens sport like gentlemen.
