Todd's Vegas rant

I recall playing in a mini tourney at the Glass City Open and as I was walking to around the table to my next shot I turn and look at the shot when I notice this camera sitting on the rail being held by Diana Hoppe...I just about busted out laughing because I didn't even see her sneaking up...LOLz...she was crouched down and all I saw were hands around a camera right above the pocket I was shooting in.....

Although I don't ever expect it to change, I would LOVE to see pool and golf change their crowd restrictions. Major league baseball and football have it right - encourage the fans to make a ruckus - it's fun.

When you are expecting silence, the distractions you mention are very real (and I definitely sympathize). If, however, everyone would expect noise and visual distractions, they would learn quickly how to deal with it. We all have played in noisy poolhalls. If Barry Bonds can hit a 95 mph fastball with 40,000 people screaming, you guys can learn to play with distractions.

Shooting Blind

I can agree with the noise. But when someone takes a flash from a darkened audience and temporarily blinds u, that is really bad. What if u are on a shot clock? Are u just supposed to close your eyes and take a wild shot? Flash cameras are and must continue to b banned? We all come to watch the best shooters play at their very best, not to watch them shoot blinded from a camera's flash.

Just wondering... why not silent mode? I agree if they set it on a bench and it vibrates and makes noise, that's unacceptable. If it vibrates silently and they answer the phone, also unacceptable, IMO. Yeah, I guess its better to just say, turn the damn things off, no warnings, one strike and you have to get the **** out. :D That's probably the only way some people will learn. Too bad you can't just let the player smash it, that would be so satisfying. :)

It feels like many people have no consideration for other people these days. Cell phones are just another tool to put in the a***ole tool chest. You should have to pass an etiquette exam before they give you a cell phone. :p LOL!

Generally, I don't mind people answering them in most public places IF they will talk in a normal tone as if they are having a normal conversation with someone standing right there. The problem is the persona and loud voice people automatically tend to use on the phone. Very annoying. :(

I agree about the ringers and flashes. Are they there to watch pool and appreciate the talent, or are they there to disrupt things and get free mementos at the expense of the players?

Even at weekly amateur tourneys, I like the no cell phone rule. They have that rule at Hard Times in Sacramento, and I wish that all other pool halls had it too. After one warning (which I think is generous) the offending phone-owner loses a game. Next time, they lose the match.

Sure, if its a banger tourney where the majority of players aren't very serious and there’s a bunch of other noise, who cares? But for any kind of tourney where the players are half-way serious about pool, its just a matter of respect for your fellow man (or woman).

At a USPPA tourney a couple of weeks ago someone's message alert thing kept beeping AND his low battery beep kept going off through the entire tournament. I wanted to ask him to turn it off, but I was so pissed at that point that I didn't think I could say anything productive.

I guess, in reality, most people don't even realize how annoying they are being when they do these things, and a lot of people probably aren't even bothered by it. However, its a shame that a small percentage of people won't even cooperate at a huge tourney when asked nicely. -- JM"H"O

I can understand the cell phone-In fact i have seen Pro players, tournament directors and staff all have their cell phones ring during play. We all have cell phones in our pockets now and we dont think about them at all until they go off or we are reminded. They should remind everyone coming in the entrance but they don't. An announcement is made every few hours- Not good enough.

But cameras?? You have to take them out and use them!!! How can you not be reminded at THAT MOMENT that a flash could be on and check it?? The answer- I don't know!

Dave, the problem is, these people have never read the book that comes with the camera and they don't know the flash will automatically go off.
In other words, they don't have a clue.

Good call, I agree. Better to get it off your chest in a polite way. Usually people will be cool about it. I should have tried to figure out where the beep was coming from and deal with it appropriately instead of letting it get under my skin. Glad, at least, I didn't choose to have a hissy fit over it. (Although my boxers did get in a bunch.) :p
On the other side of the coin, if I say something in a crabby tone, it doesn't do my attitude a bit of good. So, smile when you speak.

On a sort of related note, when I get a bad roll, or hook myself, I have better results when I chuckle about it, than if I go off. I just laugh it off, and announce that this is just another chance to make a great shot.

They should have a license for all the gizmos everyone should pass before they can start using them. For the license you'd need to learn how to use a camera without the flashlight and turn off the mobile etc. People are so dumb and ignorant and don't know how to use their stuff, they just like showing 'em off.

The player getting flashed should have the option of smashing the offending device or having the person thrown out.
HAHAHA wouldn't that be GREAT to watch... they had the same thing happening at the Predator tournament in FL. The people doing this obviously don't play or they would know how annoying it is. I work in a pool room and as soon as someone comes in with a camera I tell them to take it out to the car because I don't want it in my room. If people can't play by the rules they just need to ban cameras from the events.

Yeah, I agree. That's why I didn't say anything at all. I really didn't feel like smiling at that point. :o Next time, hopefully I'll be in a better mood and can politely make the request...

It's not just flashes anymore.. Even if you turn off the flash many of the cameras out now shine this kind of orange "grid" on whatever it is your taking a picture of.. The girl sitting next to me at the WPBA event turned the flash off on her camera and went to take a picture.. LOL Lit up the table that allison fisher was playing on like a christmas tree for one second. I told her about it, and she said that you can only see that on the screen, to which I responded "Well I just saw it all over the table out there?" Allison came over and commented very pleasantly about the camera having some sort of "red light" etc.. My old Sony camera doesn't do it, but my g/f's new sony camera does it as well!

My suggestions:

Cell phone rings- broken or given to player.

Flash from camera- camera broken, film exposed in front of owner and then wrapped around their neck as a leash to walk them out.

Nextel squeeling phone/CB- phone broke and owner is shot... and then stabbed...and then shocked with a stun gun...and then Hillbilly gets to hit a break shot at their head.

Hard to tell I can't stand Nextel phones, isn't it? My pool hall is inundated with construction jerk-offs who never, ever play pool. They just drink Budweiser (and complain about it going from $1.00 a pint to $1.50) and talk as loud as they can on their Nextels in pathetic attempts to impress the bar girls. Die, you bastards.

LMAO!! :D
